Three months complimentry FM Traffic updates for Nuvi 760

I bought Nuvi 760 from Costco Canada today but when I tried to enable Traffic updates, I got the message to enter FM Traffic reciver id on www.garmin.com/fmtraffic to get code to enable it.

But when I go to Garmin web site, it is asking me to purchase lifetime subscription.

How do I activate free 3 months subscription?
I will appreciate your advice.

Traffic Updates

Not sure as my unit has lifetime traffic enabled, but I'm sure if you call or email Garmin support on Monday, they can help you sort it out.

Just plug it into the DC power outlet in your vehicle!

The activation is automatic the first time you plug the receiver into the DC power outlet in your vehicle. You do not have to do anything until the 90 days free service expires.

Automatic

It does that all on its own giving you no choice when to activate your free subscription. The first time you plug it in, will actually go through a software upgrade for the traffic stuff before it gets going.

abes of maine

I bought my 660 from Abes of Maine over a year ago. When I plugged it in the very first time and checked the traffic subscription it had been started 6 days earlier. They denied it was used or tested. After pressing and with the evidence, they offered to switch it with a new one. Maybe yours was a demo too.

Already Activated?

Rookie,

As another forum member has mentioned, it's possible your unit has already been powered up, apparently more than three months ago.

There may be a better way to do this but if you visit the Garmin site and register the unit you'll be told the first time it ever accessed the satellite constellation. Print that page (or print the screen) so you have proof the unit wasn't new then take it back to the store for an exchange.

Cheers

Your subscription starts the first time your unit acquires a traffic signal. If you are confident that your geographical area has coverage, you should register it as previously suggested, and see what it shows for an activation date. It is not at all unusual for this date to be inaccurate and not indicative of previous use. Worst case, Garmin will ask you to fax them a copy of your invoice showing the purchase date.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Thanks all for your advice.

Thanks all for your advice. It looks like this unit was previously used. I will call Garmin on Monday as well otherwise I will take it back to Costco.

The problem is fixed now. I

The problem is fixed now. I was reading knowledgebase on garmin site and found out that you need to upgrade firmware of GPS to make Traffic alerts work.

After reading about all the issues people had with 4.1, I was reluctant to upgrade firmware. When I checked firmware version on mine, it was 4.1. Yesterday, I also noticed TTS lag while driving in the city.

So I decided to upgrade firmware to 4.2 after reading POI forum that 4.2 has fixed all issues.
So I checked all the required updates, eg. for FM Traffic, MSN Direct, Bluetooth TTS etc.

After firmware upgrade, I tested it this morning.
As soon as I plugged it in the car, it did firmware upgrade for traffic and traffic started working. TTS lag is also gone.

Why this site is so great

And Rookie's ordeal and all the help that he got from the rest of the users is why the POI Factory rocks!

Many times I received help on issues that I had as well.

Check?

I think Garmin should send Miss Poi a monthly check to help keep this site going. It is better support than Garmin's site. and is probably responsible for more Garmin sales too. (she can then afford the new outfit and picture)

I found out the real cause

I found out the real cause why FM traffic alerts did not work on that day. The reason was that there is no traffic data available on weekends in Canada.
FM traffic data is only available Monday to Friday 6AM to 7 PM in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver etc.

Traffic

I had the 760 and traffic was automatic. I now own the 765T with free traffic. Free traffic by itself will pay for the unit in a few years compared to yearly traffic subscriptions.

traffic the same

I have the 760. Is the traffic with the 765 the same Clear Channel traffic received via FM as the 760?

unsure

Not sure if from clear channel but from what I understand it is FM....could be wrong...It is now built into the device not the plug....I think from what I read.

The 760 uses Clear Channel. The 765 uses Navteq traffic. The Clear Channel covers more areas, but the Navteq traffic has flow information for every area they cover (except Toronto).

built in?

The lifetime traffic firmware is in the receiver power cord not the GPS unit itself. But the lifetime traffic only will work with the matching GPS unit type.

I pulled this off the Garmin site.If you don't like the free FM Traffic you can pay for the msn direct.I believe the MSN receiver is somewhere around $115 dollars but comes with 1 year MSN service. You can the lifetime for 100 plus dollars.
