gps got stolen... *sigh*

guess im in teh market for a new GPS (and a new side window). are the nuvi 760s portable ? i.e. can i drop it into a pocket and not leave it in the car ? my 60csx was not (and hence got stolen from its hardwired mount). also will the 760 take a 16gb sdhc (im looking at adata or patriot which go for 40 bux) and allow me to fill it with euro maps, bluechart and mp3s ?? ive got the 760 on order from costco.ca for $320 CDN which seems cheaper than the states.

Yes, the 7xx series are quite comfortable to carry around - or stash in your trunk if you don't want to take it with you.

Sorry for your loss.

I always

take mine out of the vehicle no matter how long I'm gone. There are a lot of people who seem to like it more than others.

My condolences

Yes. I take my 750 out of the car when I park at night. When I'm at work, they stay in the arm rest storage along with all the wiring.

I use a 2GB SD card, and I've heard it can accommodate up to 4GB. I've never heard anyone use 16GB, though.

Sorry about your loss, zurk.

Sorry about your loss, zurk. You might want to get the beanbag mount as well so you can quickly and easily tuck the new unit out of sight. I'd echo spider's comment about the 16GB disk. The OS may not support one that large

I hope you had your Garmin lock activated!!

I hope you had your Garmin lock activated!! Just so the theif gets no use out of it.

Sorry to hear about the theft......

Major bummer! I lived in the Chicago-land and Washington DC areas for much of my life, and had my vehicles broken into more times than I care to think about...... it's not just the loss of whatever was stolen, there's also a sense of frustration and violation that's difficult to describe.

I second the bean-bag mount option, that's all I use, and remove it and stuff it under my seat every time I get out of my vehicle. I learned that "out of sight - out of mind" helps a lot.

Take care......

.

I used to live in a downtown hi-rise apartment with 'secure' underground parking... Despite the fact they had full time security guards on patrol, the parking lot was a popular shopping center for inner city miscreants.

After having a couple of car break-ins, I learned the only way to prevent theft is to remove everything of value from the vehicle.

I had several things stolen from under my seat and from the center armrest hatch. Many thieves are well aware that people often tuck things of value out of sight.

If you must leave anything in the car, it's best to lock it in the trunk.

Very good.....

Very good. It would appear that some people NEVER learn that. mrgreen

The trunk thing ONLY works if there is NOT a non-locking lever beside the driver that opens it.

trunk

On my car (VW) you can disable the trunk release with the master key, although a determined thief could just tilt the back seat forward if he really wanted in. X2 on the Garmin lock-you can steal my GPS, but you won't be using it. You'll have to get your drug money from somebody else's GPS loss.

Sorry for the break-in, can

Sorry for the break-in, can only imagine how frustrated you must be.

I must agree with everyone here, NEVER leave valuables in plain sight. People are so desperate these days, even if you detach the GPS from the mount stuck to the windshield, if they see the mount, the criminal will break into the car ANYWAY because they think the GPS is stashed in a compartment somewhere. Very unfortunate.

I've even heard of psychopaths on the road who will follow you home if they can see the GPS mounted on your window, just so they can take it when you leave the vehicle.

If possible, take it with you. If you MUST, put it inside the trunk and lock the trunk. But look around you to make sure nobody's watching.

I just bought the 760 and it's really slim compared to other "bricks" out there. I took it to my office to update today and already got lots of compliments on the slim form factor. It's almost the same length and width as an iPhone, but obviously thicker, but not that bad. Although it easily fits in my pockets, I used an old smart Blackberry case I had at home and this fits my GPS perfectly. I hate wasting money on cases and useless accessories anyway.

Good luck and be safe!
