Poi use

I often read how many poi's we all load and how we categorize them etc. Lets hear from fellow users how helpful they are and how often they come into play when traveling. I find great fun in my 660 announcing the upcoming poi while traveling. Has anyone had a poi anniuncement play an important role in one of their travels??

The rest stop POI is great.

The rest stop POI is great. I set it to announce 1 mile before I arrived. It was right on the money on my trip from St. Louis to Smoky Mountains. After driving 7 hours you don't want to miss a rest stop.

I tripped going up the escalator and I fell for an hour and a half!

Rest stop

I will use rest stop poi file for the first time on my next trip to daytona in feb 2009.

rest stop

Setting your rest stop alert for one mile is a good idea. I set mine for 1/4 mile and on a recent trip to Florida (1400 mi) I missed several rest stops because I couldn't change lanes fast enough.

I set mine for a half mile (2640 feet). It gives me enough time to change lanes and get ready to exit.

Rest Stops

One mile works best for me too.

Lane Changes

This is directed at no one in particular and everyone in general, so please don't take offense.

If you are complaining about not being able to make lane changes in time, this tells me you are spending too much time in the left lane. If you are going through an area you are unfamiliar with, and know you will have to make an exit, get the heck out of the left lane. Stay in the right lane so you don't have to make a screaming panic lane change across traffic.

Because I subscribe

Because I subscribe to the KISS system, I set my Rest Area Proximity alerts to 5555 ft., my Tourguide for Cracker Barrels to 5555 ft., my regular off highway restaurant files to 2222 ft. Less hunting & pecking.

As far as the Rest Area warning is concerned, the little over 1 mile warning gives me plenty of time to get in the proper lane PLUS, in some instances, the time to catch the 1 Mile warning signs along the highway that had a cover on it saying "Rest Area Closed".

POI Uses

I am going to Florida this summer and I intend to load my rest areas with at list 1500 meters this way I have plenty of time to position my self for the exit. If you are traveling at 65 to 70 miles a mile goes fast.

The same for the speed traps on my way along I-75 I put the warning for 2000 meters to be aware of the known traps along the way.
I don`t intend to speed, but some times you can go over a bit.

You can record a MP3 to put with the file on the rest area folder with your exclusive poi announcement.

If you go on the top right side you can find the word sound and see in if you can find the sound that you like.

Look in this link to learn how to do sound alerts in mp3 format:

The sound alerts some times are a good thing to have to break the monotony of the trip and have fun.

I no longer have the gps saying recalculating, now I have(searching for a new route). You can put what ever you want to animate the trip.

Good luck

Gps! ask where to go and get there! Best of all, what we need is to have accurate pois to reach all destinations
