Format for POI files

I'm fairly new to this entire process, but I have a question on how a .csv file should be built. I see some files with the negative number (longitude?) in the first column (see Penn State Football Radio Network). When I check these coordinates with Google Maps, they a re somewhere on Antartica. Other files have the negative number in the second column, and seem to be correct. They work fine in my Garmin.

So the question, which format is correct?

the garmin monopoly

Yes the negative number is the longitude. 111° West longitude is read as -111°. Google maps is just reading it as lat, long so it is looking for -111° Lat or 111° South.

All the files I have seen here list the longitude then the latitude though. I imagine that is what is needed for it to work on Garmin POI Loader since the majority of members are Garmin users. I am not sure since I have only had a Garmin for about a week and don't know the full details on it yet. Megallan POI File Editor opens the data in columns and you select which one is lat and which is long so it doesn't matter what order it is in for Magellan. I list mine as long, lat since that is what makes people happy.

Cut the longitude and place it after the latitude and you will find the correct location...

TomTom & .ov2 files

TomTom units use the .ov2 file format which lists latitude before longitude. Whether you use a Garmin, a Magellan, a Tom Tom or what have you, as long as your GPSr has the correct coordinates inputted you shouldn't get lost (the key word being shouldn't)! wink
