New Garmins

Garmin has a new generation of Nuvi's - the model numbers end in 5 (755, 765, 775, 785) My question is if there is a way to get or purchase the software in them and put onto my 760 - those features are damn cool but im a little peeved that i purchased mine not even 7 months ago and already they have cooler software - the Nuvi body and insides are the same - its only the software and Id be happy to pay for it - any thoughts? g

Everyday is a GREAT day :)

7x5 series is a lot different from the 7xx series hardware

The insides are very different. The CPU and memory are much faster plus the screen refresh rate is about 4 times as fast.

So bottom line the firmware from the 7x5 would not work on the 7xx series.

It's always something

I purposely bought a 755T when it came out because of the features and then sent it back for a 765T.

The features are nice, but the 760 is a very serviceable unit.

A main reason I bought mine was for the free traffic when I occasionally venture to the bigger cities.

Since then, Garmin came out with $60 lifetime traffic. It covers more areas than mine and has no ads which is an advantage.

So what else do you get with the 7x5 series?

Lane Guidance and Junction View: I haven't had a chance to try this out yet. I'm 120 miles from the nearest freeway. It could be great in unfamiliar surroundings, but not a reason to rush out and buy one. I hear it's pretty sparse right now.

Improved interface: Nice, but not a dealmaker. I like to have it display elevation, but not a big deal.

Improved processor and satellite fix: Works pretty well, but again not a reason to run out and buy one.

Terrain View: Only works when zoomed out 5 miles or more. Not that useful in my opinion.

Photo Navigation: Never use it.

I got my unit for a good price right after it came out, but it's already cheaper, and still was like twice as much as a 760 is going for now. You pay a price for having the latest gadget. In a few months it will probably be half the price and obsolete.

I say enjoy your 760. Right now, it's still a current model and will do well long after Garmin stops producing it. It still has all the main usability features Garmin is famous for and the newer model doesn't add anything life changing. cool

I agree with grush

Not unlike other products, Garmin is always advancing. Wait until the next series comes out and you’ll be owner of a good Nuvi, but it will also be surpassed by newer ones. I started with the 360, went to the 660 and will stop at the 780. I usually drive alone and all those new fancy screens would only serve to get me eyes off the road and that’s NOT a good idea. The three I've used are as good as I need. Bottom line is get what you need and don’t worry about the rest. Keep yer eyes on the road and listen to Nuvi. Works great.
