Black Friday

Why is it called "Black Friday"? Sounds so ominous, I think more people would be likely to get out and shop if we called it "Sunshine Yellow Friday" or "Glittering Green Friday".
"Doo Doo Brown Friday", however, would be a poor alternative.

Black

Black is an accounting term. It's the day that retailers hope to move from the "Red" column, a loss, to the "Black" column, a profit for the year.

I was out at 5:00am and it

I was out at 5:00am and it was DEAD!! I mean, the ONLY store and I do mean ONLY store that was packed was Wal-Mart. Kohl's, K-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Radio Shack and a host of others had nearly empty lots. I walked into Lowe's at 6:00am, was greeted by a CS rep and asked what I was looking for, he pointed me to a pallet 10 feet in front of me, I picked up my item (MagLite 3 D Cell LED Flashlight for $14.97)walked to the checkout and was out the door in LESS than 5 minutes.

I told my wife yesterday that I felt the sales weren't all that great and that money is TIGHT for EVERYONE! The only store that made money today is Wal-Mart however this is the case EVERY YEAR.

Strip Mall at 6:00 AM

Went to a strip mall nearby at about 6:00 AM. Stores opened at 5:00 but I wasn't going out THAT early. The parking lots were fairly full. The Best Buy sidewalk was completely littered with coffee cups and McD and DD trash, indicating that a bunch of people had spent quite some time in line before it opened. The worst of that rush was over by the time I got there. The stores were very busy, but had enough staff to keep people moving quickly. I was in and out of Best Buy in about 30 minutes, but half of that was browsing the camera and GPS aisles after picking up what I actually went there for. I spent less than that in Target and Kohl's. We have a large outlet mall on the other side of town and all 3 lanes of the tollway were backed up for close to a mile in the wee hours of the morning with people waiting to get in.

I made several online purchases this morning; NewEgg.com with free shipping and no tax, as well as TigerDirect with only $1.99 shipping on all orders over $100. With deals like that, why wait in line?

Recession? Sure didn't look like it this morning!

I was on the road returning

I was on the road returning from my parents' house this morning, so I didn't get to do the 5 am Black Friday thing this year. I did pick up one item online from NewEgg, though, so the day wasn't a total loss.

Were there really Bargains?

The ads that I saw for several retailers showing their "door buster" products didn't really have any prices lower than their normal prices.

I know that some had "great buys" or prices, but overall, the prices weren't any lower than what I've seen online as the regular prices.

Last year, I did my "Black Friday" shopping online, and avoided the lines. This year, did the same thing - except that I didn't actually buy much for this sales event. Will wait a little longer.

At least from my perspective...

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

I was out tagging along at

I was out tagging along at 3:30am. Although we didn't buy much this year as there was not too many must have items. Although I did purchase a digital photo frame while I was out. Out of the Black Friday items I think we bought roughly 25 items and most of those were Food Choppers and Rubbermaid Bowls from Walmart. Then after we finished our black friday shopping we went out and bought 2 love seats and 2 couches.

I have purchased some

I have purchased some camera's and the Garmin 880 from 86th Street Photo... yep they try high pressure sales to get you to buy more stuff and some overpricedc add-ons... but If you don't bend over and take a hard line....you do fine. I also follow up on things to one person every couple of days. I felt the hassle was worth the significant savings.

Hi, I just bought a Garmin

Hi, I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 200W at Target on Black Friday for $119. I love this GPS.

I've got a question, for those who own this model. On the world clock, when I tried to change it to a different city, it won't recognize when I try to type in any city that is outside of the US. I highlighted the city, and type in the city such as Tokyo it says "No Matches Found". Anyone having the same problem?

Originally, the world clock has Tokyo on it, but I was messing around and change it to a different US city, now I wanted to go go back and select a city outside of the US and it could not.

Thanks

They have a horrible record in the reviews of them, I would be very careful to avoid them:

Nuvi 765T for 349.00 at Abt

I ordered a Nuvi 765T for 349.00 at Abt.com on November 29, 2008 (left over Black Friday price). It is now up to a "market price" of 497.00 so I feel pretty good. Incidentally, my 765T was cheaper than the 755T sold on Amazon (although I know that TigerGps sold the 755T for 299.00). Hope all had a great holiday and that the good times can continue throughout the remainder of the year. Be safe.
