mp3 Folders?

My Garmin came without a folder called mp3. I know you have to make a folder with this name and put your .mp3's inside.

Will the Garmin read .mp3 files inside subfolders? In other words can I make a folder for each album inside the mp3 folder and access them from the Garmin, or do I just have to make playlists?

You Can Have Folders

You can have folders within your mp3 folder. Just keep in mind that the folders would only be used by you to organize your files. The Garmin itself doesn't recognize the subfolders. It only reads whats in the mp3's id3 tag.

Thanks GadgetGuy

I wasn't sure what you meant at first, so I tried copying a folder to the Garmin. Now I see what you mean.

It would have been nice if Garmin gave you the ability to go to different folders, but I guess I can work around it.

Thanks again for your help and knowledge!

I have found it very useful

I have found it very useful to make playlists to organize everything. Scrolling thru 2000 songs gets tiresome.

Thanks, miles2912.

That's what I'm going to do. Since these can't show subfolders, that seems like the way to go.

Have you really thought through the utility of all the ID3 Tags? I believe that you can achieve easy access to anything with a proper use of the tags. For instance, an album called Humor could be a playlist of any number of titles from different artists; adding numerical digits from 01 forward to the beginning of the titles can even fine tune the play sequence.

Playlists do not work properly for all people/units.

Thanks bentbiker

That was a good tip.

ID3 tags

Media Monkey a free program on th web is an easy to use tag editor. You can change album titles or make genre for types of music such such as oldies 1960 and group all those songs. Your Garmin will display the genre a list of the songs and play one or all.

Hi Zuma314,

The same thing can be accomplished with iTunes from Apple. Not only is it free, it also comes in Mac & Windows versions.

ID3 Tages

Thanks zuma314!

Sounds like what I'm looking for.

re: tailspin

Thanks, tailspin, but I'm not sure I want any more bloated Apple software on my PC and don't have an Ipod. Good tip though, thanks.

I'll try Media Monkey which I already have installed and if that doesn't do the trick, I'll try installing Itunes.

Media Monkey

Media Monkey will do everything you want. Definitely no need for iTunes.

Just right click on a song and select Properties. That will open the id3 tag. Type your description in the Genre or Album field and you are done.

If you want to change multiple songs at once, just highlight all of the songs and follow the steps above. The field(s) will be updated in the selected songs.

.

Media Monkey rocks!

playlists

is there a free program to make the playlists? does media monkey creat playliats?

Playlists

Yep, you can easily create playlists on your Garmin using MediaMonkey.

1. Create new playlist in MediaMonkey. Right click on Playlists, select New Playlist, and drag-and-drop songs to your playlist.

2. Highlight all of the songs in your playlist (Edit-Select All).

3. File - Export to Playlist

4. name the playlist and save it either to your Garmin drive or to your memory card

Done

a playlist would work, but

a playlist would work, but im constantly moving albums in and out from my sd card on the fly and often not have enough time to acutally make playlists depending on who i am with and how long ill be. i didnt know if garmin would eventually make a work around in the update to read the id tag of how it is on the album instead of alphabetically. Here's hoping

edit: I guess what id have to do is make a playlist of every album i want to listen to in the order the song appears on the album in order to listen to them the right way. hmmm

nuvi finds mp3's anywhere on SD

My 750 finds mp3's anywhere on the SD from my Palm TX. When I connected the Palm when Win Media Player was open, it duplicated all mp3's on the SD in different location with separate playlists from Rhapsody. So if I play all from that SD on my nuvi instead of a specific album playlist, it plays every song twice in a row (unless you randomize it).

So apparently you don't need mp3's in any specific folder.

See post #6 in this thread -- add numbers to the beginning of the titles.

Media Monkey

Any better than WIN AMP?

Play Order

You can name the track number in Media Monkey Tag Editor. I am not sure but I think this will display in that order. Give it a try and let us know.
