Uploading POI to Magellan

VERY new at this, so I'm confused. Can you get the 4040 to display the description field? For example, I'm planning to upload a list of Rest Stops in CA only, that have dump facilities for my RV. If I understand other comments in the Forum, using the POI editor, you can't cause a Magellan to display "RV dump" as a description??????

Don't think so....

I have not been able to do that with my previous 4000 or the current 4250. If there is a way, I don't know what it is.

You can "merge" the name and description fields but that is pretty sloppy.

"Merge" Results

I've changed the "Name" while in the POI Editor from I-10 EX 113 Eastbound to I-10 EX EB RV Dump and that accomplishes my mission; HOWEVER, I'm not sure how I did it! After following instructions on this forum, I inserted the SD card containing the file, selected POI, then Enhanced, then Change My POI File, then Display Categories and placed the check mark next to the POI file and Saved. The file is now apparently resident on the MGLN, because I've removed the SD card and can locate the POI containing the RV Dump listings.

Is that the way this works??? Thanks for any further input.

Category

I don't know about the 4040 but on the 5310 it displays the category not the description. So if the category was "RV Dump" and then "I-10 EX 113 Eastbound" was in the file it would display "RV Dump". I am in the process of separating my speed/red light cameras into Freeway Cameras(for speed cams on freeways), Speed Cameras(for surface street cams), and Red Light Cameras. The 5310 speaks the name of the category so it will tell me what it is when I am approaching it. Works great for surface street cameras close enough to the freeway to trigger the alert. If it says Speed Camera I know it isn't on the freeway.

When you load a custom POI file from the SD card it "stores" it in the GPS. It will stay there until you select a different custom file or select "none" for custom poi.

Nope...

Yes but probably not for long. I suspect that your added POI's will disappear the next time you do a cold boot......like after it's been left off for a while, if you don't keep the SD card in place.
OR maybe you have discovered a hidden feature.

Still there....???

"I suspect that your added POI's will disappear the next time you do a cold boot..."

Actually, my 4040 was off all day yesterday (with the chip still removed) and the "RV Dumps" file was still resident within Enhanced POI's when I turned the unit on this morning?

I've now observed ways in which I could have improved on it, so my next inquiry may be how do you get rid of enhanced POI's!!!!!!!

Change the file

I tested it with my traffic camera file. It temporarily saves the custom POI file in the GPS (makes sense instead of reading the file constantly from the sd card) until you change to a new file or change it to not use a custom file.

Just change the RV Dumps file to what you want and save it to the SD Card. Then put it in the GPS and select the file as your Custom POI file. It will replace whatever Custom POI file currently being used (the old RV Dump file).

Wonder if that temporary file will survive a HARD reset ??

cpoi folder

I skipped the sd card all together and just connected my maestro to my pc, then transferred the files to the CPOI folder. TFAT > USER > CPOI is the order of the folders, I think, I don't have it in front of me to confirm. I would imagine they'd stay in there until you delete them or format the gps.

I will have to try when I have it out of the car next time.

Different thing

If you do it that way, I know they will stay. I have tried it!
