Chit Chat Thread for the week of November 03, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

It's CHANGE all right!

Miki wrote:

Hi, everyone,

If you'll recall, some two years ago, control of our Congress was taken over by the Dems. They "promised" change also. After two plus years, they've accomplished virtually nothing, and their approval rating is lower than ever. If our new President needs their help to accomplish his goals, I fear he's in big trouble before he ever gets started. I, like a lot of people, want to see some changes for the better, but our new President won't be able to do it by himself.

I agree it is prudent to lower expecations a bit, as neither candidate could do everything in their campaign. I hope Pelosi learns from what happened when Newt G ran things for the Republicans (I used to be a Republican back then.) I hope they all move a bit to the center and can get something accomplished.

However, I would not underestimate Obama. He beat the Clinton political machine in the primary season and both inspired and ran a terrific campaign.

Although the electoral vote was a "sweep" nearly, the popular vote was pretty close, with about 47% voting for McCain. But the support was petty broad-based. So, I don't think Obama has to bow to any special interest: I don't think NARAL can take credit for the election, as it didn't seem to be an issue in the exit polls. Likewise, it wasn't only the unions, or the South Florida residents, or voters in Ohio, that gave Obama the 52%, or the final electoral number. It was a combination of groups and states, and no one "owns" him.

I was sitting with someone from the Philippines last night, watching the crowd around the White House. In the Philippines, such a crowd could pose a real threat of storming the fence, and rampaging the place. Here, the CHANGE was effected at the ballot box.

Salamat sa Dios! (Thanks be to God!)

There will be change

But I fear it won't be for the best.

Congress under Ms. Pelosi is in session for only 2 1/2 days a week. They have every Monday and Friday off to travel and usually break early on Thursday to "get a head start."

Get ready for the prices to rise.

jkaplan wrote:

Drove to Buffalo yesterday. Stopped on the Thruway to fill up. Big mistake. #3.19 a gallon for regular. $2.89 per gallon once I got off the Thruway. Back here in Cleveland, a gallon of regular is $1.99. Now 20 or 30 cents difference is one thing, but $1.20 a gallon difference!! That's highway, make that Thruway robbery. mad

Thruways,Turnpikes & exits close to freeway have always been been a lot more expensive, your mistake was you didn't get gas before you got on, unless of course you where just looking.

I seen gas at $1.79 a gallon in Mentor today, I expect now that the election is over, we will see prices to rise for the Thanksgiving Holiday and those close thereafter. So you may as well fill your tanks before they do, we all see the prices drop by pennies but go up by quarters or more at a time and that should be against the law.

Only time will tell if your right, I Voted for McCain And not afraid to say so, However, It's time to put all the politicking aside and stand beside the new President. I will also look for the change he promised and when I don't see the change or he screws up I'll be the first to say something, I can do that because I voted and for those that didn't you will have to keep your mouth shut because nobody wants to here a word from you.

I really wish Obama all the luck in the world for the good of my country and his Presidency. Before being either a Democrat,Republican or even a Independent I am an American first and I can see past the partisan crap.

So as Americans it's time to do just that, put the crap aside and give the man a shot at what he says he can do, then we can revisit this thread next year and give a intelligent answer to this thread.

Not that your answer wasn't, it was just premature be cause we really don't know yet, being elected is one thing doing is another.

Whichever candidate won would have left a lot of people disappointed as "their man" didn't. Even more will be disappointed as the campaign promises from both turn into so much rhetoric. Any way you look at it, we are facing serious issues and no matter who sits in the White House, they deserve our support.

Salute to Obama Team...Good Job! (No Joke!)

Kudos to the Obama team! No doubt, very organized, and dedicated...Being a conservative voter, I wasn't ever pleased with McCain. When Palin was added to the ticket, I relented and decided maybe I should wake-up and pay attention to my core principles and go out and support the ticket...Well, after the results, I agree with a lot of the conservative pundits that it's high time we stop taking the advice of the opposition party and follow our conservative roots. We need to stop leaning "Left" and stay "Right" on the issues...I really couldn't tell the difference in issues between Nobama and McBlame by election Tuesday! I will no longer consider myself a Republican...Only a "Conservative" from now on! Sorry, but I really needed to vent! What a week!

You got Obama and we got Snow

Well, you got Obama and we got Snow and it didn't cost us a dime. The money that was spent would have helped a lot of people in need. I just hope things pick up down in the U.S of A. We will be watching closely from up north in Canada.

A lot of talk has been said about how much was spent on the election... $5,000,000,000. That is a lot of money, by comparison the US retail sales of potato chips was $6,000,000,000 last year... shock

new freebe nuvi arrived

Just one week after charging one tank of gas, the free nuvi that Discover promised arrived from Amazon. To begin with is is not the advertised 200 but a 270. (not complaining) It is similar to my 350, but does not announce the names of upcoming streets. I took her for her first ride last night. She isn't quite as talkative as Karen, but well traveled. She seems to know about Europe and Asia, loads faster than Karen and is more sensitive even without the flip up antenna. At some future date I will retire to the reading/bath room and actually study the instruction book. The price was certainly right and thank you to those who alerted me to the offer.

Change?

[sarcasm on]Isn't that just to continue the work that Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Cheney, Rove et al. started with the warrantless tapping, torture, national ID cards (for travel) etc.? [sarcasm off]

It's ironic that Americans used to make fun of the lack of liberties the USSR had back in the 1980s, but just some 25 years later, we're living those jokes -- all in the name of "anti-terrorist" measures.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
