SD card performance?

Sorry if this has already been addressed.

Is there any difference in system performance with poi's loaded on a SD card versus system memory?

.

A small number of people have said they feel performance is slightly better on the unit, but I think the vast majority feel there is no difference.

I have found no noticeable difference in the performance. I have an 8 G SDHC. I use it to load books for my long trips.

No Problem

I thnk the real problem with the SD card is when you use it with a multitude of MP3 files or pictures. On Some units (not all) upon boot the system must first read all files on the SD card. If you have lots of files (a 4 or 8GB card)it can take some time for the map to draw and the unit to be ready. POI files all end up in one file - regardless of the quantity, so you will be fine.

SD card performance

I just made a test on my 360. If I start up with my 2GB SD card in the device, after getting satellite lock, I go to View Map. Then for 55-60 seconds it sits on "drawing..." before the map shows up. If I do the same without the card then the map comes up instantly.

Of course when you are in the car wanting to get going those 55-60 seconds feels much much longer.

So from now on I will only put in the card when I want to listen to music. And yes I have the Garmin connected to the car stereo through a cassette adapter (otherwise I wouldn't use the Garmin to listen to music).

I should also mention that my SD card is maxed out with MP3 files.

Hopefully this could be helpful to somebody else that has been waiting in the driveway for the map to show up.

SD Card Performance?

I have been using a 4 GB card in my Numi 200 and can not tell any difference.

I have about 1 GB of Maps

I have about 1 GB of Maps and 20 MB of POIs that I keep on an SD card in my Nuvi 200.

I haven't noticed a performance difference in map redraws etc when the map data is internal and haven't had much use for the maps on the SD card yet so I can't jusdge that.

I have noticed a significant difference in "boot time" though. Times are to the first warning screen.

14-15 sec with no SD card
18 sec with 2 GB card
25 sec with 4 GB card
18 sec with 8 GB card

The 4 GB card is rated "Class 6". I measured the 8 GB card at 9 MB/s write and 17 MB/sec read. I haven't gotten around to checking the 4 GB card yet but I suspect it's slower than the other 2 and accounts for the much slower boot time. I just stopped using it in the Nuvi.

hmm

I wouldn't expect any difference in access time but if the unit treats files on the sd card differently that would be the problem.
