using a sd card with the nuvi

I have been working in getting pois on the sd card and have succeeded, however, I have another question. It appears that any poi's that I have on the nuvi are deleted when I put in my sd card. In other words you cannot have different poi's on the nuvi and the sd card because the sd card overides what is on the nuvi. When I take the sd card out, the pois that were on the sd card have been transfered to the nuvi. It is very confusing. Is this correct?

With my nuvi 270... I only

With my nuvi 270... I only have the custom pois on the sd card. When I turn on this GPS with the sd card in its slot, the nuvi asks whether I want to transfer those sd card pois to the GPS itself...and I turn it down. Does your unit do the same? Since the question occurs each time I turn on the nuvi, I'm assuming that the pois do not transfer.

File Structure

I've had trouble getting my nuvi to even see my SD card. What kind of file structure am I supposed to be using?

Do I just have all of my ".csv" files randomly on the card or do I need files and organization?

I had the same problem.

I had the same problem. Therefore, I put my POI's on the nuvi and my photos and mp3's on the card. Also, I had to create folders on the nuvi and put 2 or 3 poi's in each folder for it to recognize all my POI's. I have about 15 POI's in 5 folders and everything works great.

The SD card in my nuvi 270

The SD card in my nuvi 270 is a read only situation, the nuvi cannot write to the card.

Thus I remove the sd card from the nuvi if I want to update it, and using my sd usb reader, I attach the reader/card to my computer. I then use the POI Loader to transfer my folder (and subfolders) of custom poi files to the card. The POI Loader recognizes the "H" drive (in my case) rather than the garmin nuvi, and then brings across the files. I use manual mode to set alerts using this system. For pois I do *not* transfer the poi custom files directly to the sd card (like I would for an external drive) but use the POI Loader. I can transfer images directly to the sd card, but not the pois

If the first popup asking whether you want to transfer, does not offer a checkbox to stop asking, answer "Yes" and you will be given the chance to address each gpi file on the card (probably you have only one, unless you are renaming them). With each gpi file, you will then be given the chance to mark a checkbox to quit asking.

No, that is not the way it should work. You should be able to have POI.gpi files on both the unit and the card and the unit should see them both. You are loading the csv and gpx files from your computer to the unit with POI Loader, correct? And accessing them under Extras/Custom-POIs on the GPS, right? I ask because gpx files placed directly on the cards of some units will automatically transfer to the favorites list on the unit.

No csv or gpx files should be on your card except for very unusual reasons. They are loaded from your computer to the unit with POI Loader and they are all included in a single POI.gpi file. You don't have to create any structure on the GPS -- POI Loader will put them in the correct spot. I suggest you follow Motorcycle Mama's methodologies to create categories on the GPS:

Motorcycle Mama wrote:

YYou can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

No CSV on the SD Card

Nuvi does not read CSV files from the SD card nor from its internal memory. You have to use POILoader to read the CSV files stored on your computer. POILoader compiles them all into a single GPI file and transfers that either to the GPS memory or your SD card as you choose. The GPI file is a compilation of all the CSV files and the icons and MP3 files (if present) into one single POI file that then gets sent to the GPS or your SD card.
