Temporarily disabling custom POI's

Is it posible to temporarily disable custom POI's without removing them? For example, if I have a POI file of hotels, but during this trip I don't need to be alerted to them, can I turn off the alert but be able to turn them back on for a trip maybe later in the day?

Temporarily disabling custom POI's

You can go to your menu and turn of the alert notification but it will turn of all alert if I am not mistaken haven't done it before.

On my 750 if is under tools,

On my 750 if is under tools, Proximity Points, P Alerts: Change. Uncheck Custom POIs.

If you disable custom POI's

If you disable custom POI's it will disable all POI's. I dont think you can choose one out of many POI's

POI Loader

If you use "POI Loader" you can disable alerts on individual files. Instead of "Express" select "Manual" then uncheck "This file contains proximity alerts points" for your hotel file. Finish reloading your POIs and you should be all set.

No, you can not

I asked this question a while ago because it would be very handy to have a lot of POIs loaded and turn them off and on at will. But alas, the answer is no, you can not. You can only turn all of them off and on as a group. Or at least that is the case with my Nuvi.

Yes You Can

Just load them on an SD card and then remove the card when you want to "disable" them. Some folks even have multiple cards for various interests/POI's.

Jerry - I'm just curious, when you put in or take out the SD card, do you power off the GPS first? I'm always a little reluctant to change an SD card with power on.

Nuvi's are not Hot Swappable

SD Cards are made for hot swapping & plug & play. If you look at the contacts on any SD Card you will see that the contacts are stagged so they go in and out in a specific order.

However Garmin reports that that Nuvi's memory card slot is not hot-swappable, it may be because the Nuvi software is not designed to handle a hot swap, or it may be due a physical design choice, such as the memory card slot being located under the battery.

This is strictly a Garmin problem. The SD Cards Are Hot Swappable, the Nuvi's are not.

I'm not even sure I

I'm not even sure I understand why you would want alerts on a hotel POI file??? If I'm in an unfamiliar area and I want lodging, I'll just do a search for nearby hotels then, and pick the one I want. I don't set alerts for anything that isn't really necessary. It would be easy to have alerts going off all the time. That would drive me nuts and possibly inspire my wife to divorce me. wink

I only use alerts for some local speed traps, school zones, and rest areas.... that's about it. The rest of my POI's I just search when I need something.

Safe Removal

As a precaution, I always power down my Nuvi unit before removing the SD card.

Unsafe Removal

I guess I've been lucky. I haven't been powering down before the SD card was removed. I didn't realize the gps wasn't made for hot swapping. Time to change my ways!

I Wonder...

I may be wrong, but it looks to me like the Garmin unit "reads" the contents of the SD card at power-on. So I wonder if maybe it is not an electrical issue, but one where the Garmin doesn't read the SD card if its inserted after power-up?!?

POI's only at bootup

I believe this is the case. POI's appear to be loaded during bootup only. I have swapped SD cards that only have MP3's on them and it has picked up the new MP3's when I click Browse. I just don't think it will do that with POI's.

Yup

Yeah, that's the way I think they operate, also. It looks for .gpi files during boot, but not if you switch cards while powered up. I can see where the mp3 player would read the card after power-up. It has to, to play the files, but the .gpi files are only read once during boot.

It reads

It read my gpi files whenever I put the card in. The display jumps to the screen where it asks if you want to put it on the internal memory.

Well, I'll Be!
