2010 Map update

Does anyone know when will Garmin release 2010 map update?

In 2009

Sometime in 2009, usually April.

Although Garmin also has a new lifetime quarterly map program. So who knows when they will issue updates for that.

lifetime quarterly map

Excuse my ignorance, but what does that mean? Is that what I do when I go through the WebUpdater?

Different

WebUpdater updates the unit's firmware and voice files, not maps.

Here is a discussion on the lifetime maps:

When?

Did Garmin ever roll-out the quarterly update plan?

I think they did but not interested because to me it is not

worth it unless you live in a place where they are constantly building new road.

Quarterly Updates

I heard some things awhile back that Garmin was supposed to come up with a map update plan like Navigon Freshmaps and that they were coming out with lifetime FM traffic.

They came out with the lifetime traffic, but I haven't heard anything lately about a map plan with multiple yearly updates.

Huh?

Don't you live in Falls Church, VA? They have more road projects going than they know what to do with in that region.

I just recently read somewhere that a Garmin nuMaps lifetime update plan has been delayed until early 2009.

i'm not sure anyone's location is adding that many new roads every year? maybe a few new residential developments, but its not worth paying to update annualy.

2010 Update not executing?

Garmin's 2010 map update is not executing? I'm downloading it to my desktop. When I double click it right after the download completes, it halts in the thinking mode.... and nothing comes up.

Anyone else had this issue?

Patinece is required

It's a big file and can take a while to appear to be running. Some report a wait of many minutes before the computer appears to be doing anything after starting execution of the 2GB downloaded file.

And if you're using a PC with MS Vista, turning off the UAC will speed up the execution tremendously. A search here on POI Factory for UAC should yield lots of agreement.

The map is a self-extracting archive which means running the file will decompress it automatically. There is also no message that it is doing such and appears to lock up the PC. To actually see what is going on in the decompression stage, you can try decompressing manually by using WinRAR or 7-Zip.

Is it windows 7?

Might not help you but this is my case. I dl 2010.3 on my windows 7 desktop. Double click, after awhile it said error connecting server. Tried on 3 different windows 7 computers, no go. Used it on my XP computer at work installed with no problem. For testing, I went home and used my wife laptop which has xp on it. Again, installed with no problem.

Problem with W7

There is a problem reported using Windows 7 doing exactly what you saw. I understand Garmin "is working on it" so that, along with $5 you can get a cup of coffee at your favorite java joint.

It depends

It depends on how you think. We had a new tollway built back in 2005 and the update never showed up till 2010.2. That was well worth it since the old map would always route me on the tollway and thought I was driving on fields. smile

This may work

This may work for you on a Windows 7 machine - right click on the downloaded exe file and select Properties. On the Properties screen click the Compatibility tab and select Windows XP as the compatibility mode. While your there clicking the box 'Run this program as Administrator' never hurts either.

I updated both my 780 and 1490 from a Windows 7 machine without any issues but that's Windows for you smile

both windows 7 installs went fine with no problems

I did the latest 2010.30 map download and install on my 64 bit Windows 7 desktop and my 32 bit Windows 7 laptop and both went fine with no problems.

Run as administrator if you have a problem.
