Has Anyone now started receiving Free Lifetime TMC Traffic on their Older Nuvi?

I was reading a thread on another forum about someone with a 760 nuvi having free traffic subscription show up with a expiration date of 2020. This was without signing up for anything after they updated to the 5.20 traffic update on a 760.

I checked my 760 but still shows traffic expired after the update. Has anyone else found this 2020 date on their unit after updating to 5.20?

Some quotes from the other forum:

"Just checked my 760 and it is also 5.20 and shows the 2020 expiration, which I assume is the free "lifetime," as I never subscribed."

"I tried another 760 which has 4.1 system software. I used web updater to update the GTM firmware to 5.20. I connected it to my GTM receiver cable which has an expired service. The firmware shows 5.20 but traffic still shows expired.

So, I guess if you have a GTM account in good standing it will extend your subscription to 2020 but if your subscription is expired it will not. At least at this time....."

That thread is about purchase of $60 lifetime traffic

I have posted there also but that thread is about the purchase of a $60 lifetime subscription.

The thread I'm referring to is about a free lifetime subscriptions that some people are getting on their older model units after the 5.20 traffic update without signing up or doing anything.

TRAFFIC

I GET THE 2020 TOO!

Everyday is a GREAT day :)

What did it show before it showed the 2020 expiration date?

Had you already signed up for anything after the initial free trial period?

Was traffic active prior to this update or did it become 2020 lifetime active after the traffic firmware 5.20 update?

Not me...

I just checked mine. It shows GTM SW Version 5.20

When I went to the subscription area it shows it expires 7/29/200 and is truncated there due to lack of space! I have a paid subscription that is due to expire 7/29/2009 which it would seem the unit is trying to display. If it was 2020 I would at least be able to see enough to let me determine that.

Perhaps it's because I have paid the $60 for the year but I definitely don't show the "lifetime" subscription.

On my 770...

I ran webupdater, updated to 4.10, updated traffic to 5.20, I then deleted the 4.10 update file from my Garmin folder... I'm still at 2.90, traffic 5.20, expiration in Dec 0f 200.... The last number doesn't show but that is what it was prior to the update. Guess you either have to accept the 4.10 update or have a 760.... rolleyes

I have a 760 with 4.10 and 5.20 traffic but get nothing

I have a 760 with 4.10 firmware and 5.20 traffic firmware but do not receive any traffic date, just shows expired date, same as before the update.

I have firmware 4.10 and traffic 5.20 and have a 760. I don't show the "lifetime" expiration. I still show the same expiration as before the update. Like yours, mine is truncated as well.

truncated text since the beginning...

Same here...mine is also truncated. Either the font used on the nuvi on the subscription page is too big and the last character is being cutoff or there is too much info trying to be displayed without the screen space to display it. Either way, this is yet another one of those little bugs that Garmin has never seen fit to fix. This bug has existed since the 7x0 series was introduced.

Still half full

Still half full and it would even get fuller with a free lifetime traffic bonus. grin

That's the way I like it...

Otherwise I spill it.... BTW I know it's not 202 as in 2020.... Maybe I'll drain the glass and get truncated.... rolleyes Probably because Mercury is in retrograde.... shock

Changes from version 5.10 to version 5.20

Changes from version 5.10 to version 5.20:
Add dynamic priority for pay service where free is available.
Display 'lifetime' for Clear Channel lifetime entries.

From the Webupdater screen

Pop-Up Ads

You will notice once the lifetime traffic becomes effective. Because you will start receiving pop-up ads.

You guys did realize that, right?

Why would lifetime apply to current users?

Why would anyone think that the lifetime offer would apply to existing owners? I would expect that Garmin made a deal with the provider and bundled the price into the new units. And it would require specialized firmware in order to receive and display the advertising that is paying for it.

I would be quite happy if they extended the offer to existing owners, especially if they offered the choice of "free but with advertising" vs "pay for service and no advertising" so we could choose what we want.

Review with screen shots and info on the pop up advertisements

This is a review on the new 755T unit with screen grabs of the ads that come with the free traffic feature. Also has the reviewers thoughts on the pop up ads after using the 755T for two weeks.

Small quote from the following linked review:

"Finally, Garmin offers free traffic updates with an ad-supported model that I was a little hesitant about. After a couple of weeks of using the unit, I can offer that it's not a terrible thing. Read on for more details and the full review..."

I am also surprised that anybody would "expect" the older units to get the new, free service. I checked my unit because folks were saying they showed lifetime subscriptions. Mine doesn't show it and I'm not really upset about it at all. New units have new features. That's how things work.
