Nuvi Series - Power to the Mount or GPS

I have only had the StreetPilot series, and have had someone ask me about getting a Nuvi. Does the 200 series power chord plug into the mount or to the unit directly? In my research it looks like the 300 and 600 series do plug into the mount, but I haven't been able to tell about the 200.

Thanks for the help.

Direct connect to 200

The charger plugs directly into the 200 itself. The mount is a "passive" mount that does nothing more that stick to the windshield and holds the GPS. There are no connectors on the mount that comes with the 200.

Do you think

Do you think that the power cable for the 200 series would be acceptable for a non geek that does not use a computer and has trouble with a tv remote? I ask because I do like the power setup for the c330 on the mount, in that it can't be put in backwards or broken off. The c550 and c580 units I have not had a problem with the power connection...but I have not let anyone borrow them either.

USB connector

The 200 uses a Mini-USB connection on the back, so it can only be plugged in one way. The charger that comes with the unit has a right angle USB connector so it plugs in and then hangs straight down.

But I can see your point if you mean that with your current unit, you can just pop them out of the cradle and go, right? Where as the 200, you pop it out of the cradle, then unplug the cord from the back.

Although I don't think it matters these days. With GPS units being a hot theft item, I would suggest that anyone who used to always leave the mount up on the windshield get in the habit of removing it. They will break into your car to look for the GPS when they see the mount.

Yea - I was hoping to setup the unit mount so they wouldn't have to mess with the usb cord. But also concerned that if the cable was like the c5xx series, it has about 16 pins and if abused could break off or be put in the wrong way.

They live out in the sticks, and don't go to the city very much, so theft wasn't the main issue.

Thanks for your help.

Even so, I would recommend the bean-bag. I use one on my 200 and when I pull into a parking lot I just take the unit, mount and all and put it on the floor facing the seat. That leaves nothing in view to cause someone to target the car. One advantage, the unit stays plugged in to the power cord so there is even less chance of damage to the cord or connector.

I concur with getting the bean-bag. Much easier to transfer from one vehicle to the next and hiding it away once you park.
