POIF Gang,
Just updated my Nuvi-260 to firmware 5.0 and noticed another update that was available called "GPS Chipset Type B."
Can someone please tell me what this is and whether you recommend the update.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks......MifferIM
Chipset type B
I just updated my 260 to 5.0 this AM. I did not see anything about a chipset B update. All I saw was the voice updates. Where did you see this and how old is yor 260?
Paul..... Nuvi 765T
Chipset B
It is in with the voice and text additions on my Nuvi 200 when I try updating it. I select it and it says it installs it but it is still out there waiting to be selected when I update it.
I am getting the same
I am getting the same results when I try to install the GPS Chipset Type B update. It says it installed successfully but my GPS SW version is still 2.30b and it is still in the list of available updates when I run GarminUpdater again. I originally did have version 2.20 when I first got my GPS, so it has updated once before without incident (to 2.30 which I already have).
Curious
I'm just wondering. My 260 is currently on Software Version 4.40 and GPS SW Version 2.60m.
Which ones are you all trying to update? I'm not sure that you can update the Type B chipset unless that is what your unit has. Mine is the Type M (GPS SW Version 2.60m). That is a MekTek GPS Chip. Some 260's came with a Bravo chip and the version number has a 'b' after the number.

5.0 Version
I just did an update to my 260 last week to 5.0. I did have 4.40 before. After a few days of use, all is fine with 5.0. I did not see an update for the chipset when I did the update. I don't even know what or where I have for a chip. Is it easy to find?

Just touch...
Wrench-Settings-System-About and it will tell you the Garmin software version and the GPS software version along with other system info.
You shouldn't see an update for the B Type if your chip is an M.

Release Notes?
Any details about what was changed? The release notes here
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3665
are kind of slim:
Changes made from version 4.40 to 5.00:
* Enhanced compatibility with PC applications.
In software numbering standard, when your release goes up a full number usually means major changes...

I don't
I don't see any difference, but if the changes are for something I don't use, then that would be expected. The unit works just fine with the new version. Garmin doesn't generally make earthshaking changes with any of their updates... they save that for new models so you have to pay for the additions.

I updated the chipset with help from Garmin tech support.
I had the same exact issue (so did a co-worker) with my Nuvi 200 and the Chipset Type B update - it just wouldn't update the 2.30b version.
I emailed Garmin support and they replied with an attached update file and simple instructions to apply it.
My Chipset was 2.30b and after the manual update, I am at 3.10b. I encourage anyone having this issue to email Garmin support. Strangely after the 3.10b update the webupdater still shows a Chipset B update available! Go figure..
I hope this helps.

Should I update?
I have noticed the “GPS chipset type B “in my optional updates. Did Garmin say what exactly the update was for or has anyone noticed any enhancement to their unit after the update?
