How can I create a tour file that alerts me each time I am near a particular site?

We recently returned from The Grand Tetons National Park and Yellowstone National Park. The POI files available on this site were invaluable for our traveling. What I would like to do is determine a way to modify the POI files so that an alert would be given each time we were near a point that was contained in the POI file.
POI Alerts
Am I missing something? It may vary some by model but I think that what you want is pretty much a standard feature. You might try a search here for "alert".
