Cool GPS Factoid

I was watching a show on the possibility of time travel, string theory, etc on Discovery channel last night and there was a segment on time relative to gravitational force. Since GPS sattelites are subject to less gravity than here on earth, their internal clock runs faster than here. While a very miniscule difference (1/50,000 of a sec.), the GPS system corrects for the time differential. Very cool!

nuvi 760 lover/adopt a greyhound/ change is the only constant

Faster & slower at the same time

Actually there are two factors. One is gravity, the other is relative postion. One makes the sat clock go faster while the other makes it go slower. So both have to be taken into account.

GPS Satellites

I was watching a program which talked about the responsibilities of the Air Force. One of them is maintaining the GPS satellites. Every morning they sync the satellites with an atomic clock in CO.

Thats pretty cool, thanks for that fact.

Intriguing...

Gotta love being in Space Command and syncing all those satellites. cool

GPS Satellites

Wow - I guess my Atomic Wristwatch is in sync with the satellites also, Awesome.

hard job

That must be a hard job going from satellite to satellite and getting out of your space ship and moving them around.

HAVE TO MOVE THE SECOND HAND BY HAND TOO grin

It's Good that Time is correct on Satellites.

As I rarely wear a watch (habit that stuck with me since growing up and working on a farm) I used to ask people in passing for the time. I would get a different answer all day long!

Now, with GPS, I can simply look at the display for the time. Of course - it gives me a different answer every time I look at it.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

Ouch!

Don't you find the radiation burns from yiour Atomic Wristwatch to be very irritating? How much burn ointment do you go through in a week? Or do you wear a lead wrist protector? laugh out loud

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Re: And don't forget Mercury is going into retrograde

Whoa... whoa... whoa... *Ahem* Excuse me?
Let me stop things for a second here...

Did you just compare the Theory of Relativity to the pseudo-science 'astrology'?

Or are you saying astronomy is useless information?

Either way, you can't be serious, right?

As for relativity, my favorite relatives are my children... and they aren't theoretical... Like black holes or the universe is really a hologram. Are we three or four dimensional beings living on a two dimensional surface? Or are we living at singularity? Or are we living on the event horizon? Or am I from the constellation Ophiuchus? Or is this the constellation of Ophiuchus... Oh wait they say black holes aren’t theoretical any longer…. and they are never incorrect… I guess there really are eleven demensions... rolleyes

All this information is going to be sucked into a black hole and evaporate into nothing... shock

Oh BTW It's not in my nature to be serious, unless it the World Serious...

Edit: Oh another BTW Mercury really does go into retrograde Sept 24th and that's not theoretical... shock

I love the 50's Sci Fi movies wher the scientist was wearing a double breasted cotton lab coat and rubber gloves. When he went to use the reactor he would put on a set of goggles-now that's protection, LOL!

I believe the watches are sync via shortwave radio, WWV in Fort Collins, CO.
