POI Alerts question on Garmin Nuvi

Hi there, I tried doing a search on the following question and all I can find is how to make your own alert sounds.
On my Nuvi370 every time I come upon any POI I have the alert turned on it starts beeping every few feet of travel. I have tried setting it to "single tone", as well as "continuous - all alerts". No matter the setting it continues to keep beeping. Is there a way to have it give the alert once, and only once?

I don't mind so much, but when we were driving around for a weekend my wife asked me to mute the sound so as to not have to hear the "ding-ding" all the time.

Actually, its because of not being able to control audio alerts (custom or default) as you describe, that I decided not to select alerts with most of my POI files when I run POI Loader in manual mode.

I load BMP icons with just about every one, but no audio alerts. That way, I don't even get the default ding-ding.

Thanks Gary, both the link you provided, and your suggestion to use BMP Icons instead of noise is something I never thought of. I'll have to give it a shot.
