Finding a particular poi on the Nuvi

This is not a complaint. It is a question.
On the current Cracker Barrel file...
If one goes to Where To >> Custom Pois >> Restaurants >> Cracker Barrel (this is how it is set up in my file structure)...
Then how does one find a particular Cracker Barrel in the file?
Ok I am in Madison, WI and traveling... to Chicago, IL. and get a call from a customer that wants a meeting in Rockford, IL at the Cracker Barrel there... since it is on the way.
And I don't have a Cracker Barrel map with me (with my wife... THAT would be a sin believe me!!!) But say it did happen this way...
So here I am in Madison, WI on my way to Chicago, IL. I want to find the Cracker Barrel in Rockford, IL which is on my way to Chicago, IL. I got this Nuvi that has a Cracker Barrel poi file on it... should be cinch...right?
But here's the wrinkle... As the file is set up now, I have to manually go through each poi until I find the particular one I am looking for. Because the only thing in the "Name" field is "Cracker Barrel".
In this situation, the Cracker Barrel file doesn't help.
But... if in the name part of the poi line... the name of the Cracker Barrle was there... then it could be found very easily.
Here's an example....
(set up for Garmin csv)
-88.961277,42.276720,"Rockford Cracker Barrel","730 North Lyford Road, Rockford IL 61107-5314, 815-226-1944"
My question is....
Wouldn't all the files in POI Factory be more useful if the NAME field actually carried such information?
Thanks
My suggestion would be
if that's what you want - is to open the file in Excel - interchange columns 3 & 4 - then you'll have all the addresses right in the Name field.
Would be a busy field but if that's what you want !
Of no interest to me !

Is this what you're wanting ....
1. ""Where to?
2. "Near ..."
3. "A Different City" & "OK".
4. Spell & select the city you want
5. "My Locations"
6. "Custom POIs"
7. Select the POI you want
8. It will show the POIs near the area you entered.

I have just changed the way
I have just changed the way that the Cracker Barrel file page works. I have removed it from the old system and have it back to the old system. I am hoping this will make it easier to use.
Miss POI
True, but...
The "Different City" feature would probably be the best option in this particular example. However, his point should be well taken. If you're in an area with multiple locations of a store (Wal-mart for example) having the city (or road or area name) added in the name field makes it much more convenient. For example, if there are 4 Wal-marts relatively equidistant to me, it would certainly be nice to know, at a glance, which one was which. Would it be a big undertaking for existing files? Maybe – depending on what’s in the desc field and how it’s formatted. Would it be the best option for new files? Absolutely.
BTW- I know the Wal-mart file now has the city names included. Just an example since there are so many locations.
Not on my Nuvi you don't!
1. ""Where to?
2. "Near ..."
3. "A Different City" & "OK".
4. Spell & select the city you want
5. "My Locations"
6. "Custom POIs"
7. Select the POI you want
8. It will show the POIs near the area you entered.

Hmmmm......this may exist on other Nuvi's but not my 260. When I select Where to?, 'Near' is not an option.
Nuvi 350

4. Spell & select the city you want
5. "My Locations"
6. "Custom POIs"

Before I answered I looked up to see what GPS he had, a nuvi350 ... same as mine.

Double check on touching where to then look at the bottom of the gps screen for near.

I'm sorry but I think when we build files and don't care about how they are used by others.... then maybe we should keep them to ourselves? I have some files like this that I do not share.
I was not complaining, just asking a question which I thought was a reasonable question.
When we build a gps file, why not make it so it is useful to others?
It's a lot easier to get it right the first time than re-do it.
That's all I was asking about.
Thanks
Problem??
... When we build a gps file, why not make it so it is useful to others? ...
The problem I see in "make it so it is useful to others" is everyone has a different idea of 'useful'. Some previous posts requested phone numbers in the Name field as their GPS only accepted 3 fields and need dialing. Some already know what city the POI is in, therefore, want the address displayed. Some want standard linebreaks, some want nuvi linebreaks, and some don't want any linebreaks. It's difficult, if not impossible, to build a POI that's perfect for everyone. That's why I posted how to use the GPS to get what you wanted.
Sometimes we need to re-build the POI to meet our requirements; thus the reason for many of the options in 'POI Verifier II'. The latest option 'sucks' the phone number out of field 4 and attaches it to field 3 so it can be converted to OV2 to be dialed by TomTom users. This may not meet your expectations of 'useful', but it will to others! As the old saying goes, "You can please some of the people ........"!

For Nuvi 760....
1. ""Where to?
2. "Near ..."
3. "A Different City" & "OK".
4. Spell & select the city you want
5. "My Locations"
6. "Custom POIs"
7. Select the POI you want
8. It will show the POIs near the area you entered.

Good list. For Nuvi 760 change step five from "My Locations" to "Extras". Can't speak to other models. Thanks!

Retired Technician,
Thanks for your input. I did not know the Nuvi could do this. One day I am going to learn this machine...
