Good thing you have a GPS.

I am a newbie too; however I believe the directory it is looking for is the directory containing your PIO's (Points of Interest). These files are either .CSV or .GPX files and are available from this site.

Caution: There is one listing all the Krispy Kreme locations. smile

This version allows me to link with Microsoft MapPoint so that I can display any location on the map.
Also, new version is Vista compatible.

Just in case your not aware, POI Loader & POI Edit 2007 are two different programs that do different things.

Can anyone just create a POI

Can anyone just create a POI files of the tri-state? So that we don't have to load the files of the whole USA? Thanx.

Tri-state

Sangay,
You need to be more specific when you use the term "tri-state". Many areas of the country use this term in regards to a location. Just an fyi.

Creating a localized edition of a file

Everyone has specific areas that they may be looking for. It is quite easy to narrow down the area in a .csv file and create a new one, specific to your needs.
The procedure is a follows:

1. Determine the longitude and latitude boundries for the area you desire. [You can use google earth to view the area with long and lat lines superimposed. Have the preferences set to decimal. Write down the upper and lower lines and the east and west lines for the border you need]

2. Open .csv file in Excel. Sort the data by column A [Select all and then go to data, sort] The data is now sorted by longitude.

3. Highlight the longitude (column A values) are greater than the largest longitude determined in step 1 and delete them. Then highlight the longitude values less than the smallest longitude determined in step 1 and delete them.

4. Repeat step 2 but sort by column B (latitude).

5. Follow the same procedure for deletion for latitude values as you did in step 3 for longitude.

You can now save this file as a new .csv for the area you wanted i.e. in your case the Tristate area. Although it will be boxed off, it will be pretty close to what you want.

POI Edit...

I uploaded this program and can not open my POI files now. Any reason why? The only one that actually opened in POI EDIT was the new poi file recently created of fl publix stores with numbers. Why are my other poi's unable to be opened in POI EDIT?

I have experienced the same problem with files that have 4 columns with forced line breaks... One solution, if you want to use POI Edit with them is to run POI Verifier and chose to eliminate the line breaks. The new file should work in POI Edit, however you won't have an organized screen on the GPS.
I mentioned (on their website) that POI Edit did not open these files but never received a response.

Thanks, will give it a try.

3 to 4 values expected on line 1

Hi! Can you tell me what this error means? I get it no matter which format I try opening the file in (it should be Garmin csv). I ran it through POI File Verifier, and it did fix a couple of things but now all I get is duplicate entry warnings. I looked at the file in Excel and notepad, and I see four values in the first row - long, lat, name, history (the shipwreck files I posted before don't have the history/extended description but I'm trying to find a way to add it). Any suggestions?

Problem is with POI Edit

ManchVegas wrote:

I believe this is the problem I have spoken about with POI Edit...It doesn't want to read many of the 4 column files. Not a problem necessarily with your file. If it ran through POI Verifier, then it should be okay.

If you want to see it in POI Edit, delete the 4th column of data and it should load okay.

I'm learning, I think

Hey, just found another cause - I ran it through Verified and had it remove line breaks (not a default option)and it worked - except I have the history in column 4 and name/label in column 3, and POI Edit showed the history in the description (opened as Garmin csv). I reversed columns 3 and 4 and now the name/label comes up as the description as it should. I then batch converted it to ov2 successfully; the points show fine on the TomTom (of course, TTN6 doesn't support POI fine details).

It might be....

Maybe that is the problem that POI Edit has, line breaks. I have noticed that it does work with some 4 column files but not with others. In any case, I use the linebreaks on my c530, so my use for POI edit is now limited.

Finding updates

alofficial wrote:

You will usually find information from one or more members of this site. Usually someone will see a reference on the Garmin site or in this case, the POI Edit site. With so many members, the information seems to pop out very quickly.
This is a great site with a great community.

Hi,

Seems to be working now I re-installed poiedit

Thanks,

Nice Tool

After reading this thread I downloaded the POI EDIT software. This is a nice tool especially since I can see the locations of the POIs on Google Map. This is a good test for POIs that you intend to use.
Chuck

Thanks

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the update.

This is a great program for editing and creating all types of GPS files. I really like the window that actually shows the location you enter using Google Maps. Thanks for the link.
