alerts on POI's

I am a new user who installed two POI's on a nuvi 350 and have two very basic questions. any help is greatly appreciated.

Initially, what is the difference from my viewpoint of a single alert and a continuous alert. Secondly, how do I turn off an alert once it has appeared?

The 2nd question is easiest to answer.

With 'normal', ie 'Along Road' alerts, you don't turn them off.
The audio plays from start to finish and the banner remains on-screen, until the alert condition is passed. The audio may be repeated.

With TourGuide alerts, you can stop them playing, by pressing the icon that appears on the map. (You can also play them again manually, and you have an option as to whether or not they play automatically in the first place).

The question regarding single/continuous is trickier ...

On most units Proximity Alerts generally play once, when you come within range and Speed Alerts sound continuously, whenever you are within range AND exceeding the set speed.

However Proximity Alerts sometimes repeat as well, perhaps if you come to a halt and then set off again... These options seem to give a way of changing this behaviour on the 3xx series.

I'm not convinced they do anything much and leave mine set to "Continuous - Speed Alerts".
