Support The Cause

Hi everyone,

Just asking everyone here at the POI Factory to help the Nuvi880 users in requesting a fix for the 880. I wrote tech support requesting the following.

-------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

I have a Garmin Nuvi880 and a splash screen I created that offers a reward if if the unit is found along with my email address. The unit is locked and requires a pin. With the unit requiring a pin the splash screen will not display, it goes right to the enter pin screen.

How do I get the splash screen to show prior to the pin screen?.

If this is not currently possible, how do I and many other Garmin owners request this option?.

This option on a locked unit would be vital to the possible recovery of a lost or stolen unit.
-------------------------------------------------------

Just asking everyone here to help out by copying this message and sending it to gramin support.

Thanks Everyone
Mike

I don't think flooding

I don't think flooding Garmin with this request is the smartest of ideas. Let them work on the Important issues, like fixing the Firmware.

Why not attach a simple sticker to the unit, with the info you want displayed, or BETTER YET Take it with you, rather than leave in in the vehicle, then it's a non-issue?

Try This

Considering it's taken Garmin over three weeks to fix a crucial firmware mistake on the 7xx series, you will probably be waiting a loooong time for Garmin to decide to add something to your 8xx series.

Lost or stolen unit

Hi,

Well, for someone who steals the unit he/she would more than likely remove the sticker. So that would be useless.

For someone who found the unit, the sticker may work and you may get lucky.

I never leave the unit in my car, I live in New York.

I think I have a better chance of getting a lost or stolen unit returned if a reward is offered and the individual who had the unit was unable to use it. I would also prefer the option of having thie screen displayed on the unit instead of placing a sticker on the box. The sticker is removable, whereas the splash screen not removable unless you get past the security screen.

Just wondering...

If you never leave it in the car, how is it going to get stolen? I am not in the least disputing, just wondering. I always keep mine with me so I have little concern about theft. Perhaps I haven't thought of everything.

How is it going to get stolen

Hi,

Homes do get burglarized, items are stolen right from peoples homes. I'm not going to have this unit with me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Items are also lost due to carelessness.

From my perspective, I don't consider a sticker "useless". It costs nothing & adds another layer of identification. Why would a thief remove a sticker if he knows the unit is inoperable/unsalable? If anything, it can possibly increase your chances of recovery, with no downside to using one. Personally, I use both (stickers & splash screen).

Also, consider this scenario: if you were a thief who just stole a GPSr and then realized the unit was locked, making it unusable/unsalable, would you then make direct contact with the owner, using the contact information supplied on the splash screen? That's highly unlikely. If however, the contact information offered an anonymous cash reward, with you (the thief) being guaranteed anonymity & not requiring you to make any uncomfortable personal contact with the rightful owner, your chances of recovery have just escalated. That's why I use the Stuffbak service, along with a splash screen.

I can attest to the fact that Stuffbak works. I once had a $600 tripod returned to me that was lost/misplaced in the woods of Acadia National Park, Maine. I can't say for sure whether the tripod was stolen or not, but I did get my property back through this service.

Use RETURN as a coupon code and get 15% off your order. This won't stop a thief, or even help if one gets a hold of it. But if an honest person finds it in the bathroom (Because you remembered to take it out of the car) to get it returned to you.

Goint to get stolen

It's the chance you take when you have a gps. I try to keep mine with me as much as I can. That way I know where it is.
