Nuvi 880 Out of Memory for Map Updates - Download to mini SSD

I've run out of memory for map updates on my Nuvi 880. I stumbled onto a POI member through Ebay when I went looking for another Nuvi for my spouse and found that the seller could download the full map update to a mini SSD. I agreed to purchase the Nuvi he had and the added map update.I had purchased the lifetime map update through Garmin when I first bought the Nuvi 880 but the memory just isn't sufficient to accommodate updates and keep the 'hands free' tools working.

Guided through a few steps and plugged in the SSD and I had the new, complete maps for all of North America and Canada. With the voice 'hands free' still working.
cause
That was several years ago and now I'm in need of another map update. Roads have changed or new ones added and my current map is lacking.

I'm looking for the someone who can download the latest complete map update to a SSD and sell it to me.

I want to keep this Nuvi 880 because it has an FM transmitter that I use a lot. New Garmin ubits do not have this feature any longer.

If anyone knows anyone that has the skillset to do the map download to an SSD, please contact me. palestar1@gmail.com

Card availability

One problem that might be encountered is finding the card, which is properly referred to as a microSD card, not "SSD". Garmin's website states the 880 can use a maximum size card of 8GB which is difficult to find these days. I'm generally against buying memory cards from Amazon, but they still show an 8GB card at https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk%C2%AE-microSDHCTM-8GB-Memory-....

If you've had smart phones for several years, you might check in old phones for a card that is no longer being used, that again is 8GB or less.

Phranc is correct that you should be able to update the nuvi 880 to the latest full CN NA map using the cloning method providing that:
1) The nuvi 880 still has an active lifetime maps subscription.
2) You have copy of the GarminDevice.xml file from the device for an installed CN NA map prior to version 2022.25
3) You have a properly formatted FAT32 micro SD card of 8 to 32 GB.
4) You carefully follow the method stated in the referenced FAQ for 8x0 and 8x5 devices.

Nuvi 880 Out of Memory for Map Updates - Download to mini SSD

phranc - Thanks for the info... I'll work on it after my trip to Montreal this morning to pickup people from the airport.

John from PA 8gb SD

I've been using a 32gb in my 880 for several years trouble free. It had the map plus music and audiobooks installed that I play over my vehicles radio.

As reported earlier I bought a Garmin 880 from a guy I found on eBay. When I asked about the map and that my 880 was out of onboard memory he offered to sell me the City Navigator North America NT 2020.10.gmap already installed on a 32gb mini SD.

It turned out that the guy is a member on here and I was hoping to reconnect and get a 2022 map update. I see that there is a cloning method that another member directed me to. I'll try that and hope I don't muck up the process and end up with brick.

alandb - Nuvi 880 Map Update With Cloning.

Thanks... I'll try this and see if I can do this without ruining my Garmin 880. I drive charters and road changes in a few cities requires that I get the newer maps. A recent trip to Montreal had me going in circles as the 880 tried to get me onto the 136 highway that had been shifted due to construction changes. A little embarrassing with clients onboard.

And yes. I did purchase lifetime map updates way back when. I stopped using it when I couldn't get the full CN and NA maps installed AND keep my voice command functions due to the onboard memory shortage.

Getting the maps onto the mini SD allows me to keep all the toys that originally came with the 880 working. I'll go buy a new 32gb and work with that so I don't mess up my existing maps.

I'll let all know how I do sometime next week. Thanks to all that offered assistance on this.

Memory for 880 map size is 4Gb

Earlier Garmin models such as the 880 and my previous 660 are limited to a map size of 4 Gb. Go over the 4 Gb limit and the map will NOT load into the Garmin memory.

However, using 2 or more maps of less than 4 Gb will work. Used this method for years.

See my post in JanJ's post detailing the steps using MapInstall. It's the 8th post down.

4 GB limit

Actually, I think all Garmin automotive devices are limited to a 4 GB maximum file size and some of the oldest ones like Street Pilot and Nuvi 3xx/6xx are limited to 2 GB. The full CN EU map exceeded 4 GB a few years ago, so Garmin Express started distributing it as 2 files when that happened. I suspect the CN NA map will soon exceed 4 GB and Garmin will have to do the same thing.

Big apology from me. (I'm 77, so cut me some slack for the memory error) Map size limit is 2 GB for 660 and probably the same for an 880.

At any rate, MapInstall will only install what your Garmin GPS will handle - even if it has to be in sections.

My 3597 has 9.62 Gb of internal memory of which only 2.61 Gb is free. MapInstall will install all of it as 1 map, if 2023.10 wasn't already there.

Garmin website says DriveSmart 76 has 16 Gb of internal "storage".
https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/721063/pn/010-02470-00#specs
But PC says 13.5 Gb of which 4.77 Gb is used. I guess the missing 2.5 Gb is used for firmware and other protected items - Bluetooth, etc.

MapInstall shows the current 2023.10 installed size as 3.83 Gb. Hopefully, Garmin has seen the 4 Gb limit and my DriveSmart 76 will be able to handle a larger map. Or maybe Garmin Express may split it up. Just have to wait and see.
