Do you get Lane Assist?
I am wondering if anyone had been successful in running any nuvi with a different nuvi software..?
I am asking this to find the possibility of running for example 880 with 885 Software, since the hardware is identical..
I just found out that nüvi® 885T software is identical byte for byte with nüvi® 880. I installed the nüvi® 885T software on my 880 and there is no difference of what so ever..
Do you get the Lane Assist feature on your 880 with the 885T software?
Battery Tip
I just wanted to share with the owners of units that can remove their battery. Yesterday, for some reason my contacts were not available to me to remotely call them up and have my voice dial them; my MSN local events were not working, all other MSN items working fine. just by removing the battery for about 2 minutes did wonders, it restored all my contacts and fixed my local events with MSN. I am beginning to find out that the reset button is usually not the best choice, just remove the battery and let it sit for a few minutes, it will save you a trip sending your unit back to Garmin
Thanks, your tip worked for me! Every time I loaded my poi's I was not seeing them. I would only see one set, then when I unload I'd still see the same set. I tried your remove the battery trick and it worked. I had to take the batter out everytime to test and it worked. I have the 855, I also noticed that I had to set the poi's distance manually then it would find all of the poi's in the directory.

Yes, please let us know. I'm reluctant to upgrade software since the previous time I did that, the unit had to be returned and I was sent a refurbished one.

Nuvi Mandatory Software Update
This came out a couple of days ago...
Mandatory Software Update
Today, Garmin released a free, mandatory GPS software update to correct a software issue that has been discovered to cause the nüvi 8x0 devices to repeatedly attempt to update GPS firmware, and then either shut down or no longer acquire GPS satellite signals.
Garmin nüvi 8x0 series products should download a firmware update immediately that will correct the software issue. This firmware update may be downloaded using Garmin's WebUpdater program.
We know our customers rely upon their Garmin GPS device(s), especially during the summer travel season, and we regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused. We are committed to developing products that are known for their quality and reliability and will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of our customers.

Bill,
If I recall correctly I stated this a few days ago and not in this particular area, but I upgraded my 880 as stated in the email and had no problem since.

Nuvi 880 update...
It's been some time since I've updated to 4.50 and I've had no issues since way back then. I recently installed ALL available updates and purchased the lifetime map update. No issues to report.
The lifetime map update 4 times a year is worth the price knowing that the maps are as current as possible 4 times a year.
I’ve been pretty lucky with my 880. I haven’t had any major issues since I purchased it almost a year ago.
I still have a wish that the 880 could play video files. Loading half hour sitcoms or movies would make this a full candy store for me. Sure would save me from having to purchase an iPod or ARCHOS when these have the potential to be such a great all around tool and entertainment gadget.
Nuvi Mandatory Software Update
My unit stopped resetting itself or rebooting after I had installed this update.

Costco club, sells the lifetime map update for nuvi online at $99.
not a bad deal..
Is this a U.S.A. Costco offer only? I've looked at the Costco.ca web site and am unable to locate such an offer. I purchased a 260W for my G-friends B-day recently.
I took a look at the U.S. Costco site and see that they are offering the 260W with $50.00 off the regular price bringing it down to $199.00. The 260W up here has been $199.00 for many months and just recently Costco had the 260W on sale for $179.00. For once the Canadian price is cheaper.

I think she likes the 260W. The trouble is that she has seen me use my 880 with its many features and is a little frustrated that the 260W doesn’t mirror them.
On the 28th she had mapped out a route on MapSource and wanted to import it into her 260W. She hooked it up to her laptop and then downloaded the route into the 260W and it went, so far so good. Then when she tried to access the route on the 260W she couldn’t find it. She then called me and 100 questions later…
After a search on POI Factory and the Garmin site I had to tell her that the 260W doesn’t support routes. Another frustration heaped upon the other shortcomings the 260W has compared to my 880. It’s to the point now that I have to keep a sharp eye on my 880 less it end up in her vehicle.
Of course she can always return it and upgrade at her own expense.

Yep, We just bought a 260W, and map source doesn't transfer routes, it only copy back way-points to GPS.

I’ve tried playing with her 260W and it is a bit frustrating with its limitations compared to the 880. However I found that I’ll need to get a larger micro-mini. At 4GB I’ve run out of memory already. It's packed with POI, MP3 and Audio Books and there is more I would like to load onto it.
The nice thing with the FM Transmitter and MP3 files is that fumbling with multiple CD’s is now history. With the help of the POI Factory family I’ve learned about and how to use the MP3TAG software so that I get the album art on the Music Player, which is another frustration for the G-Friend because she’s an Audio Book addict.
So the 4GB will go into my Rino 530CHx and the new 8GB mini going in the 880… Happy Dance now… But no RAP Music
Don't Upgrade

Nuvi 1390T
Just Received my new Garmin 1390T with Free Traffic and Map update for life. Have I noticed the few software changes and and extras that Garmin added..?
Yes I did, but this is all software changes, My Old nuvi 880, which I had bought only a over a year ago and cost me over $600, which is discontinued now the way, should also be allowed to get same software for a charge.
To be fare to consumers, Garmin should allow customers to upgrade unit software to use the new interfaces on the newer Garmin. They should also stop discontinuing models pre-maturely and stop producing new version every week!!!!

Free Traffic for a price..!!
I had noticed that my new 1390T that comes with free traffic for life, Support advertisement.!!!
When the car is going less than certain speed, the screen shows some advertisement for example "SEARS" and I have seen "Olive Garden" too. all related to your location..
Thanx BiLL Solomon
To get rid of the ads...
You either disable traffic on the unit via Tools>Settings>Traffic (the free traffic is paid for by the ads)
or
Purchase a lifetime traffic subscription for the GTM unit (the subscription is tied to the traffic unit, NOT the GPS.

I work for a technology
I work for a technology manufacturing company, and that is a money saving and common practice.
A simple "upgrade" of hardware and software , and you have the more expensive version of a similar model.
Using like motherboards and components makes building cheaper, simpler and faster for the manufacturer.

I call that ripoff ...! Sorry, but if the cost doesn't justify the changes/enhancement, then it's misleading ripoff..

There was an article in one of the I believe local papers about NavTeq and it's mapping of the streets and highways. NavTeq reported all the information is in the maps they provide - it is the GPS manufacturers that use their products that decide how much information to include in units. So, based on that report, it's not a NavTeq mapping problem, it's a Garmin routing issue.
If you notice, it will not route you on I-66 inside the beltway where it is HOV only during the commute hours. Garmin just avoids the road altogether.

Yes, the GPS tries to take you off the I-66. where did you read this article, is there a link where one can go to and read..?. I would love to complain to someone, for them not to take the easy way out. but before I do, I need to get some facts..

I was on NavTeq, and found no option to manipulate HOV. you cannot avoid them, nor you can see HOV options all together. How do we know NavTeq is actually implementing HOV criteria correctly. You can do your route on NavTeq anytime of the day, and the result will always be the same. On Garmin, on the other hand, even if you tell the GPS not to avoid HOV, it will still try to route you outside the beltway.

Navteq routed you on I-66 inside the beltway - Garmin avoided it. While it didn't have options or time of day info on the Navteq site, it didn't mean they weren't there. Some common sense would apply as well. As I remember it is very well marked as to the HOV restrictions giving someone ample time to request an alternate route if they didn't meet the qualifications.

And your point?
The original question wasn't about the HOV restrictions, it was about the existence of the road as far as the routing was concerned. Garmin does not recognize the road because of the HOV restrictions regardless of the time of day. Navteq allows routing over the road - regardless of the time of day.
The initial point was who left the road out of the routing and it is conclusively shown it is a Garmin decision and not a fault of the maps or the map provider.

As long as you are bitching to Garmin about the routing, say a few words about the lousy routing along limited access highways with access or local lanes. They are not faster or shorter than the express lanes. If the route takes you past the end of the local lanes, why do you even consider them?
Case in point - try routing from Frederick MD to Tyson's Corner VA going down I-270. 'Nuff said.

Garmin sometimes a little buggy.
It used to ask me what city - house number and street now it dont when i see the grren icon come on
On my Garmin, when I first had it, it use to ask me the house number and street, etc. by voice. Then for several months, it stopped asking me. Even removing the battery and resetting didn't change anything. Now, in the last two weeks, it is starting to ask me again. I didn't do anything different and it has the latest firmware. My 8XX series seems a little buggy.

I don't know if you are aware that you can turn off the voice prompts. Under TOOLS-SETTINGS-LANGUAGE there is an option to turn Speech Recognition Prompts on or off.
I personally prefer to leave them off since I can input a new address in half the time it takes when responding to the prompts.

RE: HOV on I-66 inside Beltway (DC)
I'm one of those that was able to load the 2011.1 map set on my 885. Driving south on 270 heading into Georgetown the other day 'Gertrude' wanted me to take the local lanes rather than stay in the express lanes. After about the 3rd exit she gave up and rerouted me to stay in the express even though I was getting off 495 onto the Cabin John/Clara Barton a little later.
2011 may have some changes that address this. It will need some further testing though.
