Adding Traffic Subsciption

My Nuvi 760 tells me that my traffic subscription will end soon so I take advantage of the $60 lifetime offer I saw on the Garmin site.

However i have run into a problem. When I enter the code, while dutifully connected to the receiver and having external power supplied, my Garmin tells me the code is accepted. Even so, when turning on my Nuvi every time in the vehicle after this, I get a reminder that my subscription is going to expire soon.

Has anyone else run into this issue and if so were you able to correct it and how?

good news

I am getting antsy to get my traffic data back up and running.

What traffic provider was with the initial 3 mo subscription that came with the 760s. Is this lifetime deal with the same data provider?

also, has anyone had an issue with their unit not using a new enough software version to add the traffic subscription? Any word on the advertisements being included with the new lifetime traffic on older units?

"if you have a subscription and update to version 5.30"

Just saw this posted on another forum just today:

"Just got off phone with Garmin and they tell me if you have a subscription and update to version 5.30 you will now have a lifetime subscription. Mine expired and I never renewed it so I'm out of luck unless I pay the $60 for life which seems ok to me."

Annual vs. Lifetime

Thank you for the answer rjrsw. Have you tried this upgrade yet?

I was told by a rep that it would be lifetime but they are still having a problem with the web site code saying annual. He also told me that this week they are all going into a big training session for the new lifetime traffic program so it appears it will be lifetime even though it says annual. According to what I was told the only choice will be lifetime.

Also others that have recently signed up were assured that shortly their's will be showing as lifetime and not yearly.

I called them because I was trying to decide if I should sign up for the Clear Channel lifetime for my 760 or wait and purchase the new 765 with lifetime traffic included. After reading more and talking with them I found out that even though Tucson is in the top 30 largest populated city's in the US it is not covered in the Navteq coverage area but the Clear Channel does cover the Tucson area. So either way I would still have to sign up for the $60 lifetime Clear Channel program to get coverage. I guess I will just stick with my 760 that is now working great with the new 4.20 firmware and just go for the lifetime traffic option.

I did the traffic update last night and, when I put my nüvi 760 in the car today, it went into it's "Updating Traffic Software" routine. When it was finished I checked my subscription info. It still says it expires at the end of next July.

Navteq, Clearchannel and lifetime...

I have gone side by side with my 660 (remaining clearchannel subscription) and 755T (Navteq free). I find that the Navteq signal coverage is not quite as strong, but with that it does receive a signal where the clearchannel does not. I will probably end up purchasing the lifetime once they figure out the subscription bugs, just to have more complete coverage with both services. Due to the lack of Navteq coverage, I am currently using my clearchannel GTM20 on my 755t...

Here is what I received in an email from garmin today.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I am sorry that this is taking so long to resolve. I have been told
that they have resolved the issue and they are Emailing new lifetime
codes to the customers who had trouble with this. Please let me know if
you do not get a code in a couple of days.

With Best Regards,"

I will post when I get my new lifetime code.

from the Garmin website...

According to the Garmin FM TMC Traffic website as of today Oct 22 2008, the $60 subscription is now described as being a "Lifetime" subscription.

"transfer"

hd100 wrote:

Traffic subscription today requires the receiver serial number. As it stands you would hope it transfers with the receiver.

Correct, you can move your receiver from one compatible unit to another. I have transfered it from my 660 to 755 with no problem and access to traffic is there. The 660 will even show with a lifetime sub to NAVTEQ.

Thank you for all the information. I just activated $60 lifetime subscription. As stated elsewhere on this site, upgraded to 4.2 and updated firmware for receiver, used Internet Explorer. The reason for IE was stated that Firefox would not work. Traffic subscription now says lifetime.

Thank you to all that had input into this update, it works!

Nuvi 760

Just did it, relatively

Just did it, relatively easy. The web page shows it correctly as a lifetime deal. I could not get the purchase made thru the website, had to call up and do it over the phone. Updating my unit and adding the traffic was as easy as advertised.

Happy to have it back, and a one time $60 fee seems fair to me.

Lifetime upgrade for annual

I had just renewed my FM traffic subscription after the 3 month free version ran out in early September. I noticed the lifetime access on the garmin site when I went to update my Nuvi 760 and there was an update for the traffic subscription.

I simply called technical support, told them I wanted my annual subscription I paid for in September upgraded to a lifetime subscription for free. Within 10 minutes Matt had the new subscription code for me. After entering the code (be sure to upgrade your firmware) it says lifetime in the expiration area.

Good deal. Their coverage isn't bad and the traffic updates are certainly worth the $60 if you do any traveling at all to large cities. It has saved me many hours in traffic jams.

Upgraded Through Email

Like dkstl, I renewed the annual in early September.
After reading these posts I figured I could get it changed to lifetime for free.
I contacted Garmin support via email and the next day I had an reply with the new authorization.
I plugged in the new code and boom, it shows lifetime subscription.
All in all, I think it's a good deal and worth it for my purposes.

I had let my subscription expire several months ago, after renewing this morning, I now have life time as well. I felt like $60 a year was a good deal, $5.00 a month for less time in traffic, I just thought of it as one less Starbucks a month smile, but $60 unlimited, Great Deal.

I got mine

Although it took a while, I got my 760 to accept a code. I believe I was one of the first to have a problem with this. I state that because when I called tech support because it wouldn't accept the lifetime code, the support guys weren't even aware that a lifetime sub was available. Sure enough within a day or so, it wasn't. Then a few weeks went by and it was again.

I think someone "went live" with the new website, before informing those that were supposed to support it. Working in IT, I've seen that happen numerous times, so it didn't surprise me.

Kudos again to Garmin's support, as I received regular emails keeping me updated as they worked to make good on the lifetime sub.
