No, I think you'll just get a message saying "Accessory connected to wrong socket" - or words to that effect.
(That's what happened when I tried the GTM-12 (from my Nüvi 310), with the Nüvi 760.)
The Garmin site shows the nüvi 780 to be "FM traffic compatible"
I have both the MSN and TMC receivers, but don't have a nüvi 780 to test.

Garmin site shows your unit would be compatible with MSN Direct, OR GTM 20, not the GTM 12.
