viewing trkpt entries

I've got a nuvi 205w. I just got it and started playing around
with it. I discovered that it plots your course in the
Garmn/GPX/Current.GPX file. I'm not sure how large that file
will get... I just reset it the other day and now I have
176 trkpt entries. This is from my office to my home (30-ish
miles. )

I wrote a small script to take the trkpt entries from the
Current.GPX file and make them into a Google Map URL.
I can access that link and 'see' my route from the office to
my house. Google map only lets you plot 20 track markers so
I have to skip sections of my trip.

Is there another application ( Linux or Web or Windows )
that will let you see more than 20 points?

Also.. does anyone know how many entries the Current.GPX
file will hold at one time? I'm about to go on trip and
I'd like to be able to plot my course afterwards. How many
points will it plot before it either starts to loose some
or completely resets?

Thanks - jack

10,000 points in Nuvi 760

I believe the limit is 10,000 points in my Nuvi 760. We just finished a 1460 mile driving trip with lots of scenic back-country and shoreline roads. When we got back, I only had about the last 900 miles worth of the tracks. Apparently, after it reaches it's limit, the Nuvi 760 starts deleting the older tracks. Fortunately, I had uploaded everything from the 760 about 2/3 of the way into the trip. I was able to copy and paste the earlier tracks into the final upload of the later tracks. This allowed me to retain most of the trip tracks. They are all time-stamped, so it's easy to see where the old leave off and the new begin.

I would gather from this that the limitation is in the Nuvi, not MapSource and not in the GPX file either. After combining the tracks in MapSource, I have a single track of 12,368 points, which comprises 1193 miles of 1460 total.

Can't say what the limit is with your 205w, but it might be similar to the 760.

The GPS Map60 creates a new "active log" every time it's turned on to save a track even if you don't move. There's an option to save to the internal memory or write to the SD card so if you write to SD the file can be as big as your memory card. If you don't use the SD it will 'wrap' the file when the internal memory is full and start over-writing the data.

The Map60 also let you select options for how to log the track points by setting distance, time, etc. between them or letting the gps do it automatically based on its own criteria. I have mine set to auto and in just a 7-8 mile hike it's logged from 500-700 track points. So 'auto' builds a every detailed trail.

By the way, it is really fun to look at tracks on Google Earth using the Visualizer tool built into MapSource. TOPO maps are nice but the Google view is a neat change of pace! Try it.

Sorry, I've never tried this before so I'm probably asking really dumb questions. But I've looked at the GP Visualizer site and read thru some of the FAQs. I can't get "track" data to show up, just POI's. I've located the Current.gpx file on my 650 and uploadded that to GPS Visualizer. Any simple answers for me?

Thanks,

The nuvi 650 doesn't support tracklogs.

Well... that explains it. Thanks,
