What is 2D and 3D?

Hi,

I have a Nuvi 260W. In some of the post I read about 2D and 3D mapviews on th Garmin's GPS. I do not know what this is about, so I hope someone will explain it to me. Thanks.

.

With all due respect, have you read your manual yet?

3D v 2d

The 2D and 3D versions of the map on the Garmins in my observerations are the difference between looking down at a paper map and being in the map (so to speak).

In 2d imagine yourself looking at a picture of your vehicle moving around a map that is laying on your kitchen table. In 3d my impression is that roads are in front beside and behind my model car running along my route.

All roads are "artistic renditions."

Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for the explanation.

I was unble to find anything in the manual.

How do you go from one view to the other>

Thanks.

The simplest way to explain it is:

2d = road view (in your car)
3d = Birds eye view (above the roads)

Bob,
Don't you have these reversed?

depends how you look at it..

That would depend.. 2d is when your looking at straight down like looking a a map. you can even change the map direction

3D is somewhat a bird eyes view but up and behind the car. again this can depend on your map direction

Map direction i think is point northy and point in the direction your going.. not sure about that one since I dont have my gps handy right now..

So it can go both ways.. really all depends how everything is set up!

2D is a top-down perspective

2D is a top-down perspective while 3D is kind of a behind the shoulder perspective.

Now *This* is 3D

No, no no, neither is 3D. This is 3D wink :

Wonder what the screen would look like if you crash into a building. I think they might as well superimpose the calculated route on the actual scenery by projecting a HUD on the windshield.

Check out "Reality View"

I just happened to see this today....it's called reality view.

Seems pretty cool...it actually shows you road signs and lanes.

Tools/Settings/Map

Thanks.

On my 760 its Tools/Settings/Map and i toggle the "Map View" item.

The adjustable options for Map on the 760 are "Map Detail," "Vehicle," "Map View" and "Trip Log."

2D vs 3D

2 dimensional does not require you to wear those funny red & blue cardboard glasses. 3D does!

I know this is an old topic,

but I found it interesting that there are some of those posters still around today. Interesting! And amazing! Good going guys.
