Factory Specs (resetting nuvi 660)

I have the 660. Is there a way to reset the unit to factory specs, I think I might have deleted something but not sure?

Use Manual Page 4

There is a reset button on the rear of the 660, under the flip-up antenna. The full instructions are on page 4 of the User Manual.

Also on that page, are step-by-step instructions for Clearing User Information.

However, in your original question, you said "deleted." If by that you mean you deleted a file while you had the 660 connected to your PC in mass storage mode, these procedures will not recover that.

Can you be more specific as to what you actually did?

Factory Specs

I thought I deleted a file called gmapprom.img by mistake, it turns out I did not. My PC crashed and was not showing it. Im on another pc and it is here. I just took a ride to test it and all is well. I guess now I have to leave the GPS and work on the pc. But if I did delete it or anyother file I needed how would I get it back ?

Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup!

Backup the entire contents of your 660 to your PC - NOW!!! grin

I'm not trying to be mean, but so many posters here have gotten into trouble after deleting a file by mistake and not having a backup.

If you had deleted the gmapprom.img file, you would be in serious trouble.

Search the forum for 'backup' and you will find many examples of how to do it. It really is very easy from Windows Explorer. Just navigate to the root directory of your nuvi, select all the folders and files listed and copy them to a backup folder on your PC's hard drive.

There are other methods, but this is the simplest.

.

Yeah, because doing a "factory reset" will not restore map files that you might delete.

Backup

I just backed up the 660. It took almost 45min.

thanks

GREAT!

You've just done yourself a big favor and possibly saved yourself a real headache down the road. Now, if you should ever accidentally delete an important nuvi system file, you can just copy it back and you will know exactly which folder it belongs in.

I'm not surprised it took 45 min to backup. The city navigator map file (gmapprom.img) is over 1GB and the base map file (gmapbmap.img) is about 14MB.

Yeah I agree - backing it up

Yeah I agree - backing it up was one of the 1st things I did.. Just incase! Only wasted part of a DVD-R razz Hope to never need it

Good Option

I forgot about that, but burning the files and folders to a DVD-R is a good option if you don't want to use up space on your computer's hard drive.

I've created a lot of 'coasters' over the years, so I would just make sure you can read back the whole DVD before deleting the files off your PC.

I backed up early

From advice on here...I am glad I have never needed it but I have the total content of my 650..and now my 660 saved to my backup hard drive. I also Back up my Favorites every once in a while..

Insurance

Its like an insurance policy - you get it and hope you never need it.

I use a utility program and periodically do an incremental backup. Only the files that have changed get copied. Much faster than the first time, back-up-everything operation.

Backup

But what would you have to do if you did not backup anything and you did delete something you needed ?

Call Garmin

In the event you deleted a file that caused the GPSr to no longer function, the only next step is to call Garmin. Most likely, they will tell you to send it in to them and they will be able to do a factory reload of the software.

Since I have not done this, I do not know if they charge for this service (in warranty vs out of warranty) or if you actually get your same unit back. They may just swap it out with a referb unit.
