What's general maintainer?

I notice my account says "progress toward general maintainer". Apparently I am nearly qualified as such. What's that mean?

The way the “stars” program works is similar to “active users”, except that it looks back over a longer period of time (6 months vs. 5 weeks). To qualify as a “star”, you need posts in at least 9 of the last 26 weeks. Looking back over a longer period of time, the “stars” program will select users who are among the most loyal, trustworthy and knowledgeable members of our community.

Time to make a FAQ on this.

So I would get credit for sending in information about new redlight camera locations, like I did last week?

yup

Yup, that is how it works.

Maintainer status

Sorry to revive an old thread.

It is frustrating to spend over a year building a POI file (school zones in Winnipeg) testing it out extensively, adding more and more files as the city adds more zones ... and I still fall off the radar unless I post regularly. I know my file is not of very wide interest (unless you live in Winnipeg) but it took a TON of work. The reason why I undertook it is because I feel drivers who are driving the speed limit through a school zone with their eyes on the road are safer than the ones with their face buried in their speedometers.

I actually used RoadTrip to place every school zone so that it complies with the actual legal description, instead of using a blanket proximity alert (which would have saved me hundreds of hours!) I did this so it would NOT alert on roads near a school zone but they don't have a reduction from 50 KPH to 30 KPH. I didn't want false alarms and I have always found too many false alarms lead to more ignoring speed zone reductions.

I just wish there was a status to reflect on the amount of work it takes people to build these files. It seems silly to do all that work for free to benefit others and then lose my ability to download RLC unless I post regularly.

@ Chickenhawks

I'm certain you've put in alot of time and effort in your file and the members here at the POI Factory do realize and appreciate it.

That being said there are several members here that post rarely but upload POI files on a regular basis and therefore retain their active status badges.

I see in your change history log the numerous changes you've done in the past year and would reccommend that you upload the changes on a regular basis in order to gain and then maintain your active status.

You can upload a few changes in your POI file every week, come by the Chit Chad thread to say hi or congratulate the COW of the week and you'll be in business.

Good luck smile

You automatically become an active member when you've made posts in at least 3 of the last 5 weeks. Activity includes uploading POI files and/or posting in the discussion forums.

If you find yourself in a situation like Chickenhawks where you've put a lot of effort into something for the POI Factory community but you've lost access to the camera files, please go ahead and send us a note via email or the contact form.

The automated member status works pretty well, but there are situations that merit some extra consideration.

You could just pick one of the no-brainer threads such as your most recent trip with you GPS. Write a one or two sentence entry and get requalified.

POI maintainer

Thanks for all the help and ideas!

The files are essentially complete and unless users report that some zones need tweaking, I won't need any more updates ... at least until the city decides to add or change some more without telling anyone (like they did the last time.)

They are certainly aware of this site and like to add a few extra zones just to thwart our efforts.

The reason I did these zones is because I WANT drivers looking out the windshield instead of staring at their speedometer. Plus, these zones are out and out revenue generators. No kid has ever been struck in a school zone by a speeding driver in all the decades I have lived in Winnipeg. The private company that provides the red light cameras/speed zone cameras in Winnipeg take a percentage of ticket revenue so you can bet they are salivating at these school zone limits. This is why the regular school zone enforcement vehicles are often found parked in a high traffic area on a Sunday night at 11PM in the middle of the summer. But the city has become drunk on the revenue.

I hate people who clutter up threads just to get the credit. Even worse is just to support their ego. I would much prefer they stick with the chitchat threads that are intended for those who "need" a post this week.

General Maintainer versus Windmill

Well, the alternative is to not post, and that isn't always a bad thing. Depending on how many weeks you've made a post in the windmill 5-week cycle, you may or may not lose your windmill. However, if I recall correctly, should you also happen to be a general maintainer, even if you do lose the windmill you still have access to the camera databases. Thus, general maintainers can afford to miss a week on occasion.

I get busy at work so I can't always get in here. Plus, i don't really like to post just to post. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't do it much. However, the folks in here are going to take care of me anyway.
