(I hope this isn't a duplicate, I haven't seen it covered previously)

Garmin has a 72MB download and I found it will install the WW basemap on the Nuvi 360 and I suspect other Garmin units. The actual map itself is 31MB. It took quite a while to load.

Did you search for "Free Worldwide basemap"?
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I looked at the thread you referenced, thanks. I tried that file and could not get it to do anything on my Nuvi. It basically quit before it started. I think it said it was looking for the Palm desktop (???).
I came across this thread from the Russian Garmin site, this is what ultimately worked on my 360:

It's a large file.

Where did you find it. I have a 760 but you never know

I'd be very careful of DL'ing anything from a Russian site. Lots of trojans, and viruses.

It's clearly an issue for concern when downloading from just about any site. I did take the time to do pre-scans and post-installation scans with 4 different detectors and came up with nothing. I'd certainly report back if I found any issues.

these are basemaps only. From what I can tell, they'd permit you to move from major city to major city along highways. There is no detail, no POIs, etc. To add the detail you've got to purchase the additional maps covering the region you desire.
