Another use for Nuvi....

Instead of booting up my computer or using the Yellow Pages to find the nearest XYZ store -- I go get my Garmin out of the car & look it up. Recently it found me the closest tire store, Baskins Robbins, and Tractor Supply store.

Seems to me by the time the unit boots up you could just look the number up in the yellow pages?
Sometimes you just need to let your fingers do the walking.

Of course it just my thoughts

New to area, GPS helps a lot

I've only had my 880 since July 15, and I am having fun with it now. I'll learn about it later I tell myself, after I enjoy it.

But I am new to this part of the country, every road seems to have a couple of names, and finding places to shop is a pain. I don't like to waste time driving around on strange roads. I was doing most of my shopping online.

Besides helping me find things in the community, it is letting me become visually familiar with the layout of the towns. If you lived up here all your life, it might be easy to understand the organization of the towns and phone books, but not so easy for a newcomer.

I really love the Google Earth Plus on my computer because I can explore the streets and highways and get my directional bearings. Now that I know I can use Google Earth to create POI and Viapoints, I have more reason than ever for taking the Garmin 880 with me when I leave the house.

Where do I find these "Yellow Pages" things you speak of?

I honestly do not keep them around anymore as it would be redundant.

Plus here, I would need four huge books, and a few smaller ones. Not worth the space they take up for the rare occasion that I might use them.

GPS alternate uses

My Nuvi 350 boots fairly fast, but never really used it like this. Usually it's when the low gas light comes on and I'm running on vapors...

I wonder how many folks use their Nuvi's or other similar GPS as an MP3 player? I use it basically 50% in the car and 50% around the house (with GPS off) just to play MP3 files. It would be nice if Garmin and other manufacturers added more features and memory for MP3s.

I still get the Yellow Pages

I still get the Yellow Pages since I have a Verizon land line. Not sure if Fios customers would get them. I find that what's online and what's in the book are not necessarily the same (take finding a locksmith or heating and cooling repair), and the book actually has more info. imho there is still some value in the old-fashioned ways, it just depends on what the subject matter is....

Sorry about the double-post, must be the touchpad on my laptop?

FiOS & Phone Books

I have Verizon FiOS (phone/TV/internet) and yes, we still get the Verizon phone books delivered to us, white & yellow pages.

I have many songs on my Nuvi 680. The problem I have using it as an MP3 player aroung the house is that the battery doesn't last very long versus using an ipod that seems to go all day.

Car cord used inside w/ cig plug adaptor

Ahsumtoy, I forget where I got this adaptor, online somewhere, but I have my Nuvi 880 cord plugged into it in the house to 110 power plug. I use the suction cup mount in the window beside my computer and can keep it (and the MSNDirect builtin antenna) operational and even charge the battery too.

By using this one cord, with the adaptor connected, I don't need to buy a dedicated 110 cord--which would not have the MSNDirect antenna builtin.

You might want to look for a cig plug/110 adaptor.
Then you could play your music inside, and briefly disconnect your Nuvi only when you go out of hearing range for its wired location.

Universal 500mAh power converter

I found it! I ordered the above product from mycellworld.com for a price of $7.16.....
(I ordered other items for my Blackberry at the same time so the shipping was $5.99 for all items.)

It works with cell phones and other electronic devices, without frying them.

It has two prongs for the 110 side, and the conversion is to a cigarette plug. It has a green light to show when it gets power,

I am very happy using it.

Two things:

  • Most people don't turn off their computers after each use, so there's no need for a "boot-up". I restart my 4 computers at home every week or two, otherwise they're always on. Same as the one at work.
  • The built-in POI in the GPSr need to be updated, like they do the Yellow Pages. Otherwise, stale POI info is hit-or-miss.
