Making your own maps

Does anyone have experience making their own maps? I am interested in learning some things about this.

I remember finding some sites on the subject about a year ago but I checked and can't find that I bookmarked any good ones.

You will find a lot if you use www.ask.com and search either mapmaking or cartography. Google's good too but I've been using Ask.com more often.

Found this in one search; sounds interesting if this is what you're asking about:

Map Maker Gratis http://www.mapmaker.com/
Free map editor and viewer. Gives students and novice users the opportunity to learn the basics of map making and GIS. Gratis can also be used to distribute map projects and data. Add maps to Google Earth.

Good Luck!

Thanks for sharing those. I quickly checked out the first one--
http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm

and it's very useful-looking. Bookmarked it right away!

I think this one--
http://www.mapman.org.uk/

is one of those I found in my geocaching research last year then lost track of again. Got it bookmarked now.

ArcView Explorer

I posted about this on another thread but you can download a free version of ArcView fron ESRI, this is the most used program by cartographers and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) professionals.
