getting coords for POI

Hey all - I had thought I could save a waypoint on my 660 and retrieve the coords later, but I can't seem to do that. Is there a way to get the coords of a saved waypoint so I can use them to create a POI with an alarm?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Download them from your unit into Mapsource. The coordinates will be displayed to the right or right click on the waypoint and select properties and the coordinates will be displayed along with other things that can be edited.

Same concerns here

Last week we were on the road in Vermont, and I found out I could do this with my Nuvi 880:

From the WHERE TO/VIEW MAP screen, I hit TOOLS.
I chose WHERE AM I? and then I SAVED LOCATION. With this, I started by having the coords, and named it what I wanted. It was saved in my favorites.

But, if you already have a waypoint/POI and want to get its coords, I have a problem understanding how to do that as well.

What I really really want, is to get the waypoints for interstate intersections that will let me travel seamlessly from Massachusetts near the NH border to south Alabama, without going near NYCity or Washington DC. I've driven it alone straight through a couple of times, and I don't want to take small roads, want to stop for gas in secure areas, and have road service close by in case of trouble. Is that too much to ask for?

DRB, I nearly wiped a hole in my computer screen trying to kill your BUG. Neat!! smile

What if you don't have Mapsource?

My 880 came without a map disk. It has the City Navigator North America NT 2009 in it and no mention of Mapsource.

What is the relationship of the maps, and are they able to coexist uploaded on the 880? Or do you just keep Mapsource on your computer?

Getting Coords

On my nüvi 200W I go to Tools>Settings>System and turn the GPS simulator ON.

Then backtrack on the menu and pick your POI from wherever you have it saved, select Map, NOT Go, and then select Set Loc.

Backtrack through the menu again and select Where To?>Coordinates.

This will show the coordinates of your 'virtual' location.

I think the Nuvi 880 has a option in routing the is called AVOID AREA, this could be used to build a route that would avoid NYC and Washington DC.

Also if you use MapSource to build the routes you can use the AREA AVOIDANCE in MapSource.

This Avoidance can be found in MapSource at:
EDIT >> PREFERENCES >> ROUTING >> ADVANCE the follow the instructions.

Mapsource can be downloaded from the Garmin Website. Your CNNA NT version will install to it. Just follow the instructions when you run the CNNA NT DvD.

Sad to say, I've looked and not found it on Garmin website. Has everyone else found it there? redface

I am currently using Google Earth Plus to build my route, which I will upload to the 880 as a series of Viapoints.

I emailed Garmin support today, asking how I can get the Mapsource on my computer, and to see if I can also get a disk of the CNNA NT 2009, which came preloaded in the 880.

Since you'll be creating POIs on your PC, you could hook your nuvi up to it and get the coords from there. Your Favorites are contained in Garmin\gpx\current.gpx in your nuvi drive. Open the file with Notepad or another text editor. Search for the name of the saved waypoint.

The coortds will be found in keywords lat = and long =

For example, the Garmin Europe waypoint:

<wpt lat ="50.901701" lon ="-1.489350">
<ele>35.934692</ele>
<name>Garmin Europ<name>
<sym>Flag, Blue</sym><wpt>

That's what you need to do to. Garmin will send you a DVD with Mapsource AND the CNNA maps.

Downloading Mapsource from the Garmin website without having the CNNA maps won't be very useful for what you want to do.

Thank you for letting me know where it was. I'd looked there, but it said it would not work if there were no Mapsource maps products. And there are none on my computer. I DO NOT HAVE a CD to use, my only maps are the preloaded ones on the 880. I thought Mapsource WAS the map, but apparently not. I want the ability to search maps ON THE COMPUTER, before I engage the 880. I want to set up my Viapoints for a route and then upload the information to the 880.

Do I need to buy a map CD?
I apologize if I appear dense. Once I get past this impasse, I think I'll be able to function! exclaim

WAASup, my previous comment must have passed yours in posting. I almost missed it at the bottom of your first remark.

So I am finally on the right path. Now if I can only be patient and wait for Garmin to respond. Thank you so much for stopping my spin into outer space.

I explored this website and found at the bottom of all the Mapsource listings the PDF file for the user's manual.

It gave answers to many of my questions. Thanks for the link to it. So much information, so little time.

I owned several SSB models in the 70's. Big honkin' directional antenna with a rotor up on the roof, with a not-so-legal power amp.

Hey Good Buddy, "Daddy Long Legs" Here

Convoy? Oh, yeah!

I spent big bucks (in 1970's money) for my top-of-the-line President CBs (before UNIDEN bought them out). Had a Washington base and a Grant mobile. Great units... once you knew how to "modify" the output power circuits. They boomed!

How to Load MapSource Update Without a Map Product

babago wrote:

If you don't have your map DVD handy and desperately want to talk to your Garmin GPSr using an available PC, I found the easiest way to load MapSource onto a Windows PC (that never had a map or Mapsource on it) using the downloadable Update file is by first installing the Garmin Training Center for Windows, available at:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=835

In addition to the training center, which you might not care about, it will install a PC world Basemap.

Then, install the latest MapSource update file, available at:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

It will find the World Basemap that the Training Center installed previously, and won't block the installation. Of course the Basemap probably won't do you any good, but at least you'll be able to transfer waypoints, tracks or routes from your Garmin GPSr.

Hope someone finds this helpful.

I noticed. I figured it went hand in hand with the question WHERE AM I? Everything points to LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION....just like the realtor always says.
