Free Worldwide Basemap Available from Garmin

It appears that Garmin has a free Worldwide Basemap available for download. It is an older version than what comes on nüvis, but might still be useful for travellers. Just backup the "Americas Lite Basemap" Ver 4.0 file "gmapbmap.img" before overwriting.

Here is the discussion link:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=64350

Here is the Garmin link:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461

It also appears that you can rename the file gmapsupp.img and use it as a supplemental map on an SD card. I will try that once the download is complete.

I'm not sure of the exact sequence but it is prbably something similar to tools>settings>map>map info, then uncheck the maps you mention and you will see the base map...

sorry, but none of the information was helpful, I'm having difficulties having the unit read the bmap

Exactly what are you trying to do...

In the folder Garmin on your unit you should have a file: gmapbmap.img, this is your base map. Do you have the file gmapbmap.img on your unit? It is the same or similar to the free basemap. I really don't know why anyone who has a base map wants the free base map. If you follow the instructions I gave you previously, and uncheck the maps that you see listed in map info, you can then view the map on your unit,or you can go to an area in some country that you don't have a map for and you will see the base map.

When the basemap is installed the way Garmin intended, it doesn't show up in the normal list of maps - it's not one that you can select or de-select - it's just there as a 'fallback', or last-resort.

It's just that there are different Basemaps available, covering different areas.

Supplemental Maps Out of Area

Hornbyp wrote:

The BASEMAP, is the map that is used, when you reference an area for which there is no DETAILED map (or zoom out beyond a certain point). The name of the base map is GMAPBMAP.IMG and does NOT work on an SD card.

If you rename it to GMAPSUPP.IMG it will work on an SD card, but now you may experience some strange (and unit-specific) effects. You will now have a SUPPLEMENTAL map, that covers a larger area than your detail maps. This is not a normal operating condition.

If you perform this experiment and like the results - fair enough. Just be aware, it's not what Garmin had in mind!

My supplemental maps have always been out of the area covered by the detailed maps. I added a supp on my SD to add Alaska and Canada to my nüvi 200. Now I have a supp map on my nüvi to cover the entire globe. Haven't noticed any anomalies yet.

Thank you..

Thank you for explaining the basemap.. I really noticed no true difference with the free basemap, I feel its a bit over-rated. Furthermore, I would like a bit of help with the voice file in changing the voice prompts....if possible.

Look at Europe or South

Look at Europe or South America with the world base map... huge difference. Not really any difference in USA.

But if you uncheck or deselect all of the maps loaded on the gps

You will only be left with the base map... so when you view "map" on the gps you will only see the base map...

And if the base map is a world map (which it is) what areas aren't covered???

From what I remember, the original basemap only showed the coastline and major cities, outside its main coverage area. The Basemap we've been discussing here, shows major roads as well (and they are routable).

From what I remember, the original basemap only showed the coastline and major cities, outside its main coverage area. The Basemap we've been discussing here, shows major roads as well (and they are routable).

In a very small town (Abadiania), the main street is a dirt road. It is near a major highway. Abadiania was shown on my eMap base map while I was there. The only thing shown was the highway and the town beside it. That basemap is over 10 years old. So obviously it shows more than major cities....

I was as surprised to see the town on the eMap as I would have been to see it on my 760...

The eMap isn't capable of giving directions, but as an experiment using my 760, I just set my location to Brasilia and then found Abadiania in cities, and the 760 is simulating a drive from Brasilia to Abadiania on major highways... My 760 has the original basemap, not the one being discussed here... (Unless they are one and the same)

Edit: BTW the simulation is taking roads that aren't shown on the base map....

Going to Rome

I am goint to Rome, Italy in October. Would the worldwide basemap be helpful to me in exploring the city.

No

Find Rome on your gps and you will see what it will show you... Just major roads....

Big difference here

In my area, Southern Maryland, there is a big difference between the WorldWide Basemap and the America's Lite. I find it odd that the older WorldWide one has many more roads than the America's Lite.

Can I get the complete link for this

thetick wrote:

You can import any valid map (.img file) to MapSource using a few additional tools. It's not trivial, but its not hard either. I used these instructions to import my Garmin 260W NA NT 2009 into MapSource without having the DVD. Note for locked maps you will need the unlock code. The free world base map is not locked.

See http://tiny.cc/4FAWP

I'd love to have the instructions on how to do this, but everytime I try to follow the link, my PC locks. Is there a different link I can use to get the information???

The Tools required is baked in with this release.
You can for exempel import not yet released mapproducts to Mapsource like City Navigator Europe NT 2008 from a gmapsupp.img file.
This is not a perfect solution but it works. Somehow =)

You need some tools to get the work done. Look for cgpsmapper, MapSetToolKit and GmapTool. Unpack and install all this tools. Cgpsmapper and GmapTool are command line programs, you need to start them from command line window or from any Norton Commander clone like Total Commander.

I assume that you have Mapsource installed and that your GPS with preinstalled maps is recognised by Windows as a removable drive, for example as drive I:

Begin with creating an empty directory for your map. Put cgpsmapper and gmaptool in this directory and make it current work directory for subsequent commands.

Unpack your map with gmaptool:
>gmaptool -S I:garmingmapprom.img

You will get several different files in your work directory. These are maps and additional files for Mapsource. You need to compile preview map:
>cgpsmapper mapset00.mp

Now you can use MapSetToolKit. Start it and choose "Install A Existing Mapset". You have to point to tdb file mapset00.tdb, preview file mapset00.img and invent a registry name. Install and your map should be visible in Mapsource.

You have to unlock map in Mapsource. Simply input 25-character unlock code from your device. This can be found on papers attached to your GPS, on mygarmin.com after registration, in file garminGarminDevice.xml or garmingmapprom.unl or in a file gmaptool00.unl in map directory on your PC.

And as usually: no guarantee, Mapsource may crash, use at your own risk and responsibility.

If Mapsource crashes use MapSetToolKit to remove new map.

Try this:

(This is possibly a later version, with a GUI interface)

I have deleted the basemap on my old Nuvi 660. Any way to get it back?

Thanks!

Can you advise how this one is different to the one in http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3413 ?

For those wondering why you need (would like) a better world basemap ... If you are traveling international (Europe) with your trusty NUVI you buy the area street map - but if you play with your NUVI while in transit - say between Hong Kong and London, then a better world basemap gives you more detail about where you are.... Helps pass the time???

@ pchinote

Your link looks to be a slightly newer basemap, however the file size is smaller so I'm not sure what that means.

FYI: added the 1st links basemap with no problem on my 760 Nuvi's SD card as a supplemental map as described in previous posts.

I'll check out your link a bit later and see if I can see a difference.

@ gdfaini

Thanks for this, I like having the world in my pocket LOL
