Is there a way to convert a ,mp3 file to a ,vpm file?

I am using Garmin Mobile XT on my Palm Treo 700w and want to incorporate a voice file with some POI files. The POI files have been created with the .mp3 files (both named the same, except for the extension) in the same directory, but the .mp3 files do not play. Any advice and specific examples would certainly be appreciated.

Though I've not personally tried it, you may be able to do what you want with this:

I looks like you'll have to convert the MP3s to WAV files first.

Tried It

I have tried this and you need multiple .wav files to convert. Maybe I could split the .wav file. Its worth a try.

This might work

Solution:

After much research including trial and error, I have been told by Garmin that Mobile XT does not support the playing of .mp3 files. Also .vpm files are proprietary to Garmin, so there is no easy way to convert a .mp3 or .wav file to a .vpm file. Thank you everyone for your responses.

CONVERT WAV TO VPM

Panama i want to change the voices of my garmin and put some tom tom voices on it(lol). I already have them in wav files , but how can i convert them into VPM file i tried some programs in the net but without sucess...

.VPM is Proprietary to Garmin

According to Garmin, the VPM file format is proprietary to them, so there is no program available to convert a .wav or .mp3 to .vpm. If you are using POI files, then you can put the .mp3 in the same directory as the POI and name it the same, except for the extension (i.e.- poifile.csv and poifile.mp3).

You may be able to call Garmin Support and they might have a possible solution for you. Here are their phone numbers and hours:

voice vpm

panama its not change the voices on poi files that i want (poi files is very easy to do ) i want to change the directions voices....

yes

There are already people here working with the Garmin voice files. I'm not sure if you can yet replace a TTS voice (I don't have TTS and I think the discussion I've seen so far only changes what the TTS voices say, not the voice they say it in). But you can replace the non-TTS voice files. Look for a tool by member turboccc here. (There is another tool that claims to be free for non-commercial use but after you spend hours creating the required input files you will be told that you need to make a specified "donation" or it will not work completely.)

To use your existing files you would have to convert mp3 to wav files, and you very well may be in violation of some "license" if you do so. I absolutely would advise against redistributing any file that you created with TomTom based audio (no matter how bad that I think my Garmin non-TTS voices are).

In order to clarify my post,

In order to clarify my post, the second sentence should be in a separate paragraph. It was intended to be used as a another example in addition to modifying a .vpm file.

After researching the information provided by Frovingslosh, you might try the NonTTSVoiceEditor application which can be found at the following link:

If you use this application, post and let us know how it works.
