weird thing happened..... (car not on road)

Weird thing happened today with my Nuvi 350. I had my Nuvi set to take me home when I noticed I needed gas. So I found a gas station with the Nuvi and set it as a Via Point. It brought me to the gas station and afterwords continued to my original POI (Home).
As i was driving I happened to look at the screen and noticed that the car on the screen was not locked onto the road, it was going in the right direction but beside the road. It did this for about 2 miles and then it snapped back onto the road, ...weird. Has anyone experienced this? The whole time I have had my GPS this was the first time I used a Via point. Maybe it had something to do with that?

It happens

Especially when there is a side road nearby. But, it can happen when your signal goes haywire. I have heard that sun spots can cause this effect, but I don't know what really does it.

Check to make sure you still have automobile selected as your mode of transportation. Off-road, pedestrian, etc, can cause this also.

Happens all the time

There are several times that this happens on my 3 year old maps on my c330. Some times the map data base is off, and the road is not where it is supposed to be. Then you are free wheeling.

My c580 with newer maps doesn't do it as much as the roads have been corrected.

My C340

Does itr every day on my way home from work!

If I have a destination set, it will automatically go on the main road, although I may be avoiding traffic jams and stay on the service road.

If no destination is set, and I take the main road, it almost always keeps me on the service road.

I have also had it show my vehicle driving through peoples back yards whe I was on the road in front of their houses.

And, if I do not take the recomended route, it will show me making the recomended turn when I drive straight!

Go Figure...

Blame your local highway department

The problem is with your local highway department. They failed to contact Garmin on the exact location of where the road should be built.

It happened again!

I traveled down this road today and it happened again. There are no other roads around, no ramps, exits etc. It is just a long county road and when I hit a certain point traveling down this road the pointer on the screen goes off the road to the right for about 2-3 miles then comes back on the road.
I updated the maps to 2009 and it has happened since then. I can tell you if never happened with the previous maps. I don't understand this, I thought Nuvi's had a thing where the point on the screen will always snap onto a road on the screen. This is strange especially since this is a long county road in the middle of no where.

.

It seems likely then that the position of the road may be incorrect in the map data.

Yes with my 25w

Yes it did apen to me a few times, the veh. was going off road for a good period of time and came back on the road, but going the right direction.
And this road as been there for a long time, it is note a new one.

250W anticipates

I have noticed that my 250W "thinks ahead" so that if you are on a route and make an unexpected (to it) turn it will follow the mapped route for a short time before it starts "recalculating". This is more pronounced if your new route is very close to the expected route. I figure that it is busy cross-checking to see it has it facts straight before telling you to get your act in order...

You may notice this behaviour when you go through a tunnel with an expected bend in a mapped route but no signal - it "knows" where you should be....

Good to know is not just a change in 2x5

Hi
I had posted a similar question re losing the FDR Drive with my new 255W. So glad to know it is not new chipset. Only relevant info I can add to the discussion here is that my issue happened at very slow speed so very easy for nuvi to do a quick update w/o new info showing me on the highway.

Its is not the units

You need to mark if possible the coordinates or section of road and submit them to navteq and garmin. It is the only way to get it fixed. The newer maps are much better than the old ones, but that doesn't mean there still aren't problems.
