Hello all - I am new here and have reviewed the FAQ's, but don't seem to see anything on speed POI's. It seems to be pretty coincidental if any 2 people wanted the same stretch of road, but I just wonder...
I am thinking I will need to gather the location at each speed change and create the POI manually. Are there master POI files on speed limits? What specifically would be the format for a speed limit POI?
I travel up and down I-85 between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta and thought this would be a neat feature.
Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?
Thanks,
Dean
Speed Limits
Hello Dean and welcome.
I think what you are trying to accomplish would be a herculean effort to say the least. My 750 provides posted speed limits and I would just assume it did not. My preference would be to display actual speed.
I don't know much about POI's but how would you program this? POI's are essentially proximity alerts. I guess you could program them for speed changes but don't think it would be practicle to do an entire road.

Direction is the issue
The main problem with your idea is that the unit would need to be able to have a DIFFERENT alert depending on which direction you are traveling. I think divided highways it may work but on non-divided highways this would be a problem.

posted speeds
you are right, doing a whole road might be a challenge, but I'm thinking of a few hundred miles on an interstate, which comes down to 6-8 speed changes. not tooooo bad - maybe.
i got the idea from someone with a 700 series (i have 660) and got jealous of the feature - then saw these POI's and it got me thinking, hmmmm.
I'm thinking I could get the coords at each point, then set up POI's (which will be a trick in itself).
we'll see how it works out. first step - get coords.

direction
I thought about the direction as well, worst case I thought about setting 2 POI's - one further north and one further south than the actual change, and deal with the "double" reminder. The speed changes between 70 and 55 on this stretch and can be a bee-yatch if you're not on top of it.
My struggle is the format for programming the POI's. Heck, if it doesn't work, I haven't really lost anything!!!

speed
I would go for a map update since that should include speed limits.
speed adjustment
I guess you could just put a POI right at the speed limit change sign and just have the POI say "Speed Adjustment" and have the radius encompass both sides of the road. That way when it goes off, you can look for the road sign stating the speed limit. This might be better since the gov is considering lowering the national speed limit to help conserve gas anyway.
update
I wondered about that. So, the new map includes the speed limits? That would do it. I have seen the '09 update on Garmin for $69, is that the best source?
Thanks.

speed
I was thinking along those lines. My problem is in the mechanics of creating the POI. Is there a "POI 101" download available?
