Chit Chat Thread for the week of July 14th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

That is a great bakery and plan to include it (together with a couple of other things) in an update I will post this weekend.

My wife and I have a funny story when she was pregnat and we went there long time ago. We thought sitting in the tiny non-smoking section would have saved us, but the Non-Smoking sign never dettered my fellow Greeks from coming around us and smoking.

Any other suggestions will be glad to include in the update.

Download authorization

I qualified to download files awhile back and now I can not due to not logging on and contributing. I feel what you have here is a great tool for GPS users, but not everyone has the opportunity to log on weekly and contribute. I am unable cause of my job and I am out on the road using my GPS to better my travels. I feel if you have downloaded a file once, you should be able to get the updates too even if you have not made to required contribution over the last few weeks. Not mad, love your work, keep up the good job.

I don't remember anything about not being able to download a update to a file once you do the inital signup. There are a number of people that just download and never submitt a comment or poi. It is just the redlight files you need to pay for if you don't contribute.

Alternate fuel source for vehicles.

I know that I'm dumb as a rock but this is a little food for thought. A gasoline engine runs, turning the alternator which charges the battery. With the electric car, why plug it up to charge it? The same electric motor that runs the car could turn a charging device, ie alternators, as it runs. Thus you eliminate the need to plug it in or limit it on the distance it could go before charging. It charges as it runs, on an as needed basis. But maybe this is simple and cheap, so we have to wait on a complicated more expensive answer.

Sparky Helping with energy crises

Over the last few years the Democrats have stopped most all drilling for oil. Their solution for the energy crises and $4+ gas is alternative power sources. And I just heard Nancy Palosi say that alternative sources are the only way to save us.

Well Sparky heard this and decided to do something about it. He’s is a very smart dog and has come up to a lot of real good ideas for solving the $4+ gas problem.

He invented a Wind Turbine Car. He is now in the process of testing it out. He is hoping to be able to get a patent very soon so the auto will be available for mass production in the near future.

Here is some testing I caught on my cell phone video.

Great Week

I am about two thirds done, 8 states and 1,400 miles into a road trip visiting friends and relatives. The GPS has been great. One of our side trips was through some back roads in West Virginia and I was surprised one of the roads was even on the map. I had to zoom in to get it to display. It was named but the road was a two-lane path with a little gravel on the tire paths. We were looking for a graveyard that was on an abandoned farm. We survived that trip and make it back to civilization. Planning to return on Sunday after another 4 states.

Biofuels are also alternative energy. In fact, when Henry Ford was planning his Model T, he expected that was going to be what powered it.

Oil companies already have plenty of offshore leases approved for drilling and they are not drilling on 80% of them. I say, use them or lose them. Then they would have to increase refinery capacity, which is THE major bottleneck.

Eat a ear of E85 at your next BBQ

dminz wrote:

Yes and what has E85 BioFuel done for the lowering cost of gas? NOTHING NOTHING!!!!

It is just causing food prices to rise even faster than only if they were affected by the high price of transportation.

It is cutting down on the supply of corn used for FOOD, FEED, and so many other products from corn. Thus making the supply not meet the demand. causing higher food prices. This is not just a national problem but it also is affecting the international community(Poor countries especially).

Maybe the cost of Gas will go down to $3.50, but the cost of a ear of corn for your BBQ will be $3.50 each.

PS- It was a JOKE!!!!! don't you understand humor?

Biofuels are in the first stage of development and no one believes that corn is the answer since it returns only about twice the energy required to produce it. Brazil uses sugar cane which produces an 8 times return. In the U.S., sorghum would also return 8 times and is not used for food.

I'm not sure how we started with corn. Probably something to do with a low-price crop in which we had a surplus, and agricultural industry lobbying. If we focus on other sources of biofuels, instead of drilling, we can do much better.

IMHO

IMHO, I believe we should do all of the methods shown in this thread
More drilling - ANWR and off shore and in Continental US leased areas.
New Nuclear Power Plants
More Windpower Effort Incentives
More Solar Incentives
Efficent Biofuel development and implementation.
Clean coal utilization

We need all of the above to rid ourselves of our dependency on Foreign imports to run our power needs in this country.

Just my nickels worth !

Hybrids are as close as you can get with out being a Perpetual Motion Machine. They use the gasoline and brakes to generate electricity for the batteries. Still being very dependent on gasoline.

There are three laws of thermodynamics:

The first law says you can't produce matter or energy from nothing; they are conserved.
The second says the amount of entropy in the universe can only increase.
The third notes that friction exists, so entropy does increase.

I'm going to be moving there soon, just wondering how the weather is down there lately.

Oil Prices

Wow! It's gone down about $16 a barrel this week. Sure hope it goes down some more tomorrow. They say gas prices move 2.5 cents for every dollar in crude oil movement. Bet we don't see that happening soon.

The only thing that can be added to your statement, Miss POI, is that you do an absolutely superior job! This is definately one of my favorite places (even tho I currently use a "dummie" on-board Honda Navi system that won't accept external POIs). I have a Garmin Nuvi 750 that is LOADED with POIs from your site, and I love the interaction with other folks of like interests. Thank you, and keep up the GREAT work!

Joel

Joel, I couldnt agree with you more about the status and moderation of this site.

Politically, I would like to add that while I agree that discussion on this years elections are necessary and encouraged as it will define where this countries direction will travel in many ways. However, I dont know that this site is the proper place for it. I know that you didnt discuss it, but others have.

I would also like to add that Ethanol production and Hybrid technology are already yestedays news in my opinion. I feel that we could be better served by the promotion of Nuclear technology for home power and the development of Hydrogen generation out of....yes, I am about to say it.....water for locomotion. It seems too good to be true, and it will require more maintainance as one has to watch water levels along side of fuel levels. About 2 liters (approx 2 quarts) of water can generate Hydrogen and Oxygen for about 10 hours run time and increase fuel mileage from 50% to 100% over what you are currently getting. Kits cost about $150.00 for basic systems. All you add is water and electricity at the rate of about 15 amps (from your current charging system) and you can get about 1 liter of hydro/oxygen mix per minute to add to the regular running of your car.

I am going to buy a system tonight and I will run some tests and get back too all of you with the results. I have two vastly different car platforms to test with. I cant wait!

This is a good trip for the 680. Last time I went to CA, the 680 routed me around the traffic problems fairly well. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

I await your findings with bated breath. If your findings are affirmative, and provided you aren't a sales agent for this company, I might give it a try on my 1998 Toyota pickup (4 cyl). My car is a Hybrid, and I wouldn't feel too good about messing with it's power source (since it's still under warranty).

Welcome aboard these POI's

Welcome aboard these POI's make your unit even more fun to use.

Hello Everyone.

Being new on this forum, I'd liked first to congratulate "Miss POi" who I think, has been the initiator of this web site and contributes to improve life of most GPS lovers and users. I also want to thank all other collaborators. You do a real good job. Keep on going!
I'll try, during the next months, to bring my little contribution by offering a "French" version of .csv files in regards to businesses located in Canada and/or Québec. I've downloaded a lot of .CSV files and Icons for my personal use and discovered they were mostly written in English, which is OK. This only causes a little problem when using a French language for GPS guidance. The punctuation is not the same. Example: Montreal said by a French TTS voice sounds weird. (Should be written Montréal) I decided then to re-work a few files and will contact the authors to discuss the possibility to offer your members and users, a french version of the actual version for some of the .csv files. Hope this would help.
Your comments are welcome.
I also think it might be possible to draw a logo icon with transparent background. I think his would be nicer and more representative if it can be done. I'll get back to You on this subject after experimenting.
See You soon!

I am hoping that this individual will become active in the community, I guess we will see.

Price of corn

Why should we sell corn for $6.00 a bushel and pay $148.00 a barrel for oil. It's simple, everyone knows our economy is based on oil, so all these friends of ours,(oil producing countries)just keep running the price of oil up.
We just need to follow suit with the corn prices. Barrel of oil $148.00 - Bushel of corn $148.00, Oh yea, any country that sells corn to these nations will be charge the same price. twisted

Now let's be fair about it, Cram all the corn you can get into a barrel, husks, cobs and all, then they can process it in to something they can eat or cook with. A Barrel for a barrel or let them eat sand.

Agree

I've always believed that we needed to establish "FOPEC" to offset "OPEC".... Food for oil, and we set the price for the food. Between the US and Canada, we could probably starve the world if they didn't come to the table with money. Instead, we GIVE IT AWAY to people that have no money, and never appreciate our good will........
