My only Garmin complaint

I can't see the road I'm currently driving on. I know you can with TomTom and Magellan and I was wondering if I am missing something on the 205W.
Thanks

Explain

What do you mean you can't see the road you are driving on? Which view mode do you use on your unit (2D, 3d, etc.)? Don't you see the road extended out and away from the vehicle icon on the screen?

Or perhaps you mounted the GPS onto your sunglasses blocking your view of everything? wink

Sounds like he's referring to the road name of the road your actually driving on.

You are correct

That's it. I'd like to see an 'I-85 SB or Highway 101 S' or something like that displayed while driving. Other than that, no complaints.

Highway name

My 660 displays a moving icon with the highway number on it in 3D view.

Mine also

When I'm on an interstate or something, but I'm talking about a readout at the bottom either like TomTom or Magellan(even though their current road you're traveling is at the top). I think that would be a welcome addition.

I'm confused (easily)

I don't really understand what you are looking for:
When I am on the map page,my Garmin units give me what road/highway I am travelling and usually the Direction at the top and at the bottom left gives me either my speed or ETA (depending on what mode you are in) and in the right lower corner distance to next turn (in the "GO" mode.
Just exactly what are you looking for ?

.

I think he wants the top bar to read "Driving north on Main Street" while not on a route. Garmins typically WILL do this, but only when there's not an intersection close by. Otherwise, the top bar shows the next street ahead.

U R correct MM

Thanks MM, I didn't have unit in front of me .

Not quite

When I'm on route it tells me:
At the top of the screen
1. How far to my next turn.
2. Gives me an arrow that helps with turn
3. Street/exit name for turn.

At bottom of screen I get
1. Speed
2. Menu
3. Arrival time

Click on the picture of the 205W then select the top photo and it will blow it up so you can see what I'm referring to. Not a biggie, just thought it is very doable and would be a good addition. I was hoping there was a selection hidden somewhere that I was missing, similar to my friends tomtom.

.

That picture shows the bar displaying the name of the upcoming street. Are you saying that on your map screen, it doesn't show the upcoming street like that?

If that's the case, then they've taken that functionality out of that model because the others do it.

Or are you saying that you want the 3D map mode and you are using a 2D map mode?

I thank I understand

the same is happening to me. It is like this when I am on Valley View Parkway, one piece of road 1/2 mile long it is not there, just not there. This road is over 120 years old. It was on my c330 and my c550 with map 2008 but after I put on my map 2009 it was lost along with other roads like a 10 mile piece of the South Bay Expressway from highway 54 to the north and Otay Mesa Rd to the south no road is shown.

Mine does show upcoming street

It shows upcoming street.

It doesn't display the street I am currently driving on. Look at the pic of the 205W and tell me what street they are driving on currently. That's what I was talking about. Sorry for my vague description. My wife fusses at me for that too smile

Tell your wife that you stated it perfectly from the outset. Have you noticed, as mentioned by MM, that it DOES display the street you are on when you are not being routed and aren't at a cross street? I believe the logic is that if you are being routed and you are on the route, the name of the street you are on is not important -- just the name of the next street is important.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

This must be something with

This must be something with that model. I know my 350 does display both the upcoming street and the current one as something like "Park Ave. To 1st Street".

I think that I'd like the functionality on yours better because it seems to show the direction of the next turn as well as distance. The 350 only shows the distance (unless I touch the turn icon, which I don't like doing while moving).

I don't think that there is one model that will make anybody completely happy - these are designed to please many people. I'm sure that all of us would design something quite different if we were making one just for ourselves.

Funny

Funny you should mention the wife. That is what started the entire conversation. She is heading home from Six Flags this past Sunday and calls me to tell me she has missed a turn(keep in mind she has the 205W with her) I ask where she is and she says 'it doesn't tell me what street I'm on'.(and people wonder why we have a GPS smile) I ask 'Tell me what it says across the top'. She replies 'there is a 2.4m and right arrow in the left corner followed by exit xxx right to I-85NB.' To which I reply 'you're not lost, keep going 2.4m then go right onto I-85NB.' Turns out she wasn't used to having a turn arrow and when she looked up and noticed it, she thought she was supposed to turn right then.' Anyway, short story long, that's what made me notice the current street is not displayed. She had a Garmin 250 before and it was like described above 'Park Ave. To 1st Street' or something similar.

Answer from Garmin

And much simpler than I tried to explain it smile

The Nuvi will display what road you are traveling on if you are not in a
route. It will be displayed in the green bar at the top of the map screen.
If you are in a route the display will default to your next turn.

.

Isn't that what I said?
