Need Help WIth Nuvi 260 TTS

I just bought the Nuvi 260 yesterday. I tried it out today and I think I have a problem. I updated the software thru the Garmin Website yesterday.
Anyway, when I used it to get to work today I was disappointed that the TTS (text-to-speech) did not seem to be working. The voice simply stated "In .5 miles turn right". I thought TTS meant it would actually state the road name such as "In .5 miles turn right onto Elm Street".

Should it state the street name or does TTS mean something else? Is there a setting I can change?

If this is the case where street names are not spoken I probably would have saved $50 and bought the Nuvi 200.

Please enlighten me......I am new.

NUVI 260

The Nuvi 260 does speak the street names...Double check to be sure you choose a name with TTS. If that doesn't work call Garmin...

TTS..Got It Fixed !!

OK. Thanks for the reply (quick).
I called Garmin and I had to go into
wrench > settings > language > voice.. and then choose American English-Jill (TTS). Apparently you have to choose a voice that ends with TTS. I wish I had a British Voice (female of course) that was TTS instead of "American English". Any tips to get a new TTS voice?

When I spoke to Garmin support they were VERY helpful and acted like it was a very common problem/question.

I like the GPS but feel the manual that came with it is lacking. It is a generic 200 series manual and does not mention anything about TTS.

Thanks!

P.S. Love the site. May create a new POI for the site in the future.......

Check to see

Check to see if there is a manual for the Nuvi 260 available on the Garmin website for download. The downloadable manual, usually 30-40 pages long, typically has more how-to included.

British Emily TTS

If you have not downloaded the Garmin updater from Garmin, you can find it under Garmin.com site. Look at the tabs for Downloads and updates. Download the Updater( I keep mine on my desktop), plug in your USB cable to your GPS and the rest is automatic.
It will tell if there are any updates for your 260. It will also show all the text and voices that you can use. And yes British Emily TTS is there.

I went to the Garmin site

I went to the Garmin site for your model and it doesn't show any voices for download. Not sure why but on mine you can see it has plenty for downloads https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsUpdates.jsp?produ... .I don't believe the download is any different for another model but not sure.Others have gotten the voices this way but that will be up to you.

You are missing something somewhere...

There are many available from the Garmin update site. I have many in the backup file for my Nuvi 260 that were on it when I bought it, and there are many more available by using the web updater. There are English Emily, English Daniel, Aussie Karen, Spanish Paulina, French Canadian Julie, as well as the American English Jill and Jack. I haven't downloaded any of the others available because I'm happy with just letting Jill do her thing.

I just checked on the updater and there are 11 other TTS voices on there besides the ones I just listed, plus many non TTS voices and text languages.

Unfortunately there is a small difference with the TTS files between the Cxxx series and the Nuvi, it can be over come with a bit of work around using a Hex Editor, I did it a long time ago and converted Daniel from the Cxxx files to use on my Nuvi 350 and I found this to be the clearest voice at the time. If anyone is interested I would be able to go back over my notes and give details.

I could be wrong, but try to update again. Make sure that you are using the newest version of the software on the unit (unplug it from the computer and power it up once you install the software - so it can prepare it), and then run the webupdater again. It is possible that you may get new options then.

I'd be very surprised if you didn't have more options than those.

got it
