GPI file and Symbol on Nuvi760

Hi All,

After many hours of reading and loading an unloading files on my 760 I am out of idea. I have a GPI file that I have created from a CSV to GPX to GPI. The file has ~200 waypoint. I guess my first question is will a 760 display symbols using a GPI file (yes GPI). I am calling some of the internal symbols (standard symbol)but no matter what I declare comes out at a small circle with a dot in the middle. Here is a sample of the line in my GPX file before it is translated to a GPI file.
sym Flag sym

I am using a GPXtoGPI converter.
Does anyone have an idea.

The reason I am wanting to use the GPI format is so that I can get the "More" button menu in the Garmin and also so that can define "Categories"

Edit

Tom,
You should edit your post since the line from the file didn't come through. Also, when you ask "will a 760 display symbols using a GPI file", did you mean GPX?

Are you using a dedicated program to create the file, or are you trying to do everything with a text editor? Have you tried opening you file with GeePeeEx Editor? I'm not clear whether icons called from within the gpx fille can display on the map screen of the GPS or only elsewhere -- I'm sure someone like Phil Hornby will know immediately, but they would probably like to see the wording of the line you tried to post.

I did not use the quote button, so I hope that preserves your ability to edit.

POI loader

I believe the GPI format does let you reference the built-in symbols; but POILoader doesn't let you access that functionality. Using POILoader, you have to supply a custom bitmap to use as a symbol.

Have you noticed the incompatibility between POILoader 2.5.2 and Mapsource 6.13.7? - if you enter a comment in Mapsource, it writes it to both <cmt> and <desc>. The last set of changes to POI Loader means that both fields are now utilised - thus resulting in the data being duplicated. (Reported to Garmin in April)

(re: 'Define Categories, you can't use the gpx tags that Mapsource writes - POI Loader doesn't action them either. Instead, it builds categories from the POI file name and the directory tree it encounters.)
