Garmin nüvi 880

I have had the new nüvi 880 for two days and am having a great time seeing what is new or different. The first impressions are that I like it.

The things that I expected to be different from the nüvi 760 are that there are two speakers in the front, there is a user replaceable battery, and the voice commands. This is my first MSN traffic device and the additional information is new to me.

The one thing that I had not known was going to be included was "instant on". That was a really pleasant surprise to turn the device on and not have to wait for the loading of maps, etc. The voice command feature has already proven to make the device more useful while driving and seems to work well if not in a really noisy environment such as having the radio too loud or having the top down.

I have just copied my favorites to the 880 and will be loading POI's and learning to use the new features through the weekend.

One note is that you must visit the Garmin support page to download a software update before being able to use WebUpdater.

I have the 880 too the voice

I have the 880 too the voice works great for me, and yea instant loading is really sweet, my old 760 i used to turn on while walking to the car so itll be ready

I finally was able to sell

I finally was able to sell my 680 and buy an 880 but I have noticed a few differences, or should I say several differences.
(1) I noticed on the menu bar, instead of showing the streets as you drive by, it shows which road you are travel ling on, it does show the streets in map part but not on the tool bar, (Ex. Ahead such and such a street); attention tone which I miss or unable to find yet, turn or turn off WAAS, if this included in this unit. Has anyone been able to resolve any of the above issues?
Thanks for any input.. still experimenting with the new unit
I had that same problem with web updater, I had to d/l the executable update, hopefully as stated that will now fix the use of the web updater

Adding backup camera

I see in the manual the 880 accepts the Garmin VIB-10 (for Vehicle Integration Box) which can send the audio through the car speakers, plus accept the input from a back-up camera! I couldn't find anything about what sort of camera is needed or how well it works. I found the box for sale at around $100 but what about the camera? I assume it would also require professional installation.

Anyone out there know the answers?

In this manual:

the 'video in' looks like it's a std phono connection. Presumably then, you need some sort of waterproof, outdoor surveillance type camera, that produces an analogue video signal. I assume all such cameras require a power supply, so that would make it a requirement that it runs off 12V. I'd suppose you'd need a fairly wide-angle lens for this sort of application?

(I'm guessing smile )
