A better route is available.

My c-340 has recently started announcing that there is a better route available, but it does not give me any other options. I have City Nav N. America NT v8. Any ideas? Thanx all.

I have had the same message before on my c340. Monday night I got it after driving for 90 minutes and I was 5 minutes from my destination. So far I have not been able to find a way to see the better route.

2720 also

My 2720 has done that before - believe it is in the manual. As you get closer to your destination, my unit is constantly, in the background, checking the route and options. So, as you approach an area that might have more options, you could occassionally here this message.

Did you try switching from fastest route to shortest route, or vice versa?

Nope... after hours on the road, the prompt was displayed.

After hours

I have noticed many times the GPS gives me different routes after hours. But I am yet to figure out what different it makes in travel time. I have set it to give the shortest travel time and I believe it automatically switches to (during late night) shortest route at some locations.

My C340 will advise a better route is available also. I notice that it happens if there is a turn before my scheduled turn.

I read somewhere

that when better route is suggested, you will see a diamond shaped icon on the side (triangle in europe). Press that icon and the newly calculated route will be presented. This seems a new feature on nt v8 map and, according to my memory, don't quote on this, when the gps gets closer to the destination, it can figure better route compared to what was originally suggested at the beginning calculation. I thought that I read this on the manual but cannot locate it at this time.

No Diamonds for me

I have looked for something on the screen when I get this message, but have never had any new icon show up on mine.

I have the Streetpilot c340. It sounds like the message is a common message on many of the Garmins, but the icon is only on some. Some programmer probably forgot to disable the message on the models like mine that can't get the additional information.

Better Route...

Well,

The wife and I just got back from a trip to Niagara Falls. This was a 7 hour drive for us; about 1 hour in to the trip we saw the icon (lower right of screen) for a better route and accepted the "better route." It knocked off 30 minutes from the trip. Don't know where it shaved off the time, but it seemed to work.

detour

i just use the detour button. i think the better routes depends on the situation. if i'm stuck in traffic i use the detour, most time it benefits me...

A better route is available

I have the 2620 and the 2720 SP, never had that happen but if you figure out what causes it, please pass it on. I always have mine set to fastest route not the shortest.

Better Route

I also Own A SP 2720 And mine has never done that Knock On Wood LOL

I have noticed this on all updated Garmin GPS. all units that now carry DST patch has this better route available. With so many glitches in the DST patch I had decided to downgrade my 2730 and manually set my DST time.

you can check Comparing Versions of Garmin Products topic for more detail..

Thanx

in the first place...why didn't it use the better route to start with rather than the other route it gave you. I have to assume they did not just finish paving a new road while you were driving?!?!?!

Seems odd...btw, the 530 has not done this as far as I know.

Are you sure that all garmin units have the 'better route' option? I have never seen it.

Better Route

asianfire wrote:

My understanding is that the c530 does have this capability (it's in the manual), but I haven't run into it. The explanation I have seen for better route is that when it is calculating, especially for a long route, it makes some simple assumptions to speed the calculation i.e. might take a toll road. As you get closer, it is doing some background calculations and may find a better route i.e. faster than the original calculation. This is then presented to you as an option.

Nuvi 350 with 5.20 shows an icon on screen

shadeybeep wrote:

I just had the "better route" pop up tonight and after announcing that there was a better route available, it put a diamond road sign icon in the lower right of the screen. Pressing it brought up a "A better route is available. Do you wish to take it? Yes/No" dialog. It stayed there for a while so I eventually tried it. I can't say I saw anything different in the route chosen. But then we were out in the country so the road that we were on was really the only option anyway.

550 with icon

I get the better route available in the course of a trip as the Traffic info updates. Sometimes I have to reselect the destination to generate the most up to date fastest route not just a detour around the pop up traffic.

I remember

reading the same thing...and I drive very long distances and haven't had it do it yet. Something about it still calculating during the trip for possible better routes.

Must be a bug, it should only pop up if you have a TMC or MSN traffic connected.

.

No, most of the units have this feature without traffic. It means that as you have gotten closer to your destination, the unit has calculated that based on the road available and your routing preferences, there might be a better route available than the one it first calculated.

Better route option for nuvi660

I am a new GPS user. Aside from pressing the Detour button, is there another way to force the GPS to take a route that you prefer? I know about the option of choosing shorter route vs quickest route.

A better route

I noticed this too just recently, but I thought it was a result of the traffic receiver being pluged in. A small yellow square showed up in the lower corner but did not look like the usual traffic warning. Message was that a better route was available, decided to see what happend if I said yes. I was re routed another way which showed that I would save about 15 min. from the original route.

Happy Trails

I have had the same message

This is the answer I got back from Garmin about better route on c 340.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. You will not be given any
prompts (screen touches) and you simply continue your route based on the
highlighted road

I Think I Have The Final Answer On A C340 - Kind Of!

I have a C340 and was getting that announcement but no icon came up. Then I bought a traffic receiver and now when the announcement occurs, the diamond icon in the lower right pops up. When select it, it gives me a different route. Based upon the with and without on the traffic receiver, it apparently only does something when you have the receiver.

Now the question is, what triggers the announcement if you don't have a receiver
