Does any one know how many members are apart of this site?

I was curious how many people are apart of the POIfactory family. I'm sure Miss POI knows.

numbers

Miss POI

Wow...

Very interesting....if only a tenth of these people were active.....we would have a killer amount of brain power on this website and POI files.

WOw, I would've thought that

WOw, I would've thought that we would have more active members than that.

Approximately-
0.40% are active And
99.60% are not active

Maybe some people don't even know we have a forum. They just grab the files and go.

Or... they are looking for one particular item of interest (topic or file) and after that is resolved, they don't visit anymore.

I sorta come and go as my interest flips back and forth. Right now, I am in the LG Rumor mindset and have been doing a lot with that.

I don't know...how about polling on this site?

you know what would be a great idea Miss POI, I think if you had a poll for several weeks listed on the front page of this site that ask what, why, when and how do you use this site...that would be some interesting data to look at and possibly gather some more recruits for the community.

thats a good number... it is

thats a good number... it is ashame that only 385 are active members. you should review current status and someone that has not been logged in for ... probably 1 year... delete them. thats my opinion but i am in no way telling anyone how to run their websites. L8TRS

Thats another option to look at as well...nice.

Some Just Need a Little Help..

If new members are like me, we are so excited and lost when we first get a new toy ... we are just looking around for direction. The first step is learning to turn the new toy on and then we take those baby steps that lead us to adding and programming it to do the things we want. Then we look for a community to share new ideas and chit chat with.

Could be the folks that stop by never progress, or are not interested in getting past the turning on and finding a few files part.

Oh, and thanks to all for the great information you have shared so far ...

Awesome..

its questions like these that could help encourage more people to contribute to the site. please, never feel scared to ask a question. we were all in your same shoes at once.

level of activity

I was counting activity as in the contributions made in order to get that coveted windmill;) There are 385 people on the site that have windmills in their profiles.

We have lots of people that are active on the site and stop by every few weeks.

Miss POI

I have been an active member

I have been an active member on the site for about a 15 months, and really enjoy what is offered. So... I became a member by signing up for a year membership, You should too. This is a great site.

I wanted to know...

I was looking at growing a larger active base...considering how many potential members are out there...

I just got my windmill...

This is a great site. It's not simply a forum-based discussion group for people with a common passion but it actually provides a free service with real-world benefits. I hope to have my windmill going for a long time.

Thank you...

love to hear this type of feedback and I'm sure Miss poi agrees.

Percentage Misleading

The percentage is probably a little misleading. In my brief time here--I should have my windmill with the Monday update--I seen a number of newbies some of whom will graduate to active. I would guess you'll see over 400 active in the next week or two. I moderate several yahoo groups and we have many people who check in, look around and then don't come back. Thus the members figure overestimates the group. It includes a number of long gone visitors. The active core may be a little larger than the windmill figure and the members number is a much smaller figure than the registered (visited once) figure.

Contributing factors

Looking at my member number, i'm #89732 and from the number reported by miss POI, that's a wooping 5282 (and counting, I guess). I joined 2 weeks and 18 hours ago. Should make active next Monday.

I think the number of active members will spike in the next few weeks thanks to:
- The Newsweek article
- Father's Day (got my unit as a Fday gift)
- Pre-vacation price cuts we've seen on GPS.

I will be curious to see the numbers in 2 weeks.

Simon

hopefully I will become

hopefully I will become active soon.

active members

Even though there are less than 400 active members, I believe they are capable of answering almost any question related to gps activities. I'm awed at the brain power this group possesses!!

Miss POI

They Just Grab the Files and Go.

Hi,

I go into this forum everyday. I read, I learn and even contribute, if I can. Yes I grab files I want, but I feel part of the family today just as much as when I contributed more. Watching grandchildren more often and doing more things around the house and even the shopping, has limited my time on the computer in general, but I still feel that I am a member of this family. As I have stated on numerous ocassions, this is the only forum I take part in. There may be less tha 400 windmills, but if you are on the forum, you're family.

Happy and a safe 4th to everyone.

I couldn't agree with you more, we really do have a great unit/community here.

Work / Travel

During the winter, I can devote more time to my files and helping answer questions. During the summer with trips and work there are not enough hours in the day to do it all.

There are a lot of very smart people in this group, and all you have to do is ask the right question to get the ball rolling...

this site is great, i am a newbie to gps and i would be no where right now without this site with its wonderful members and their time spent to help everyone.so what every little bit each person can contribute makes it better place for everyone.

Just Grab the Files and Go

I,too, access this form daily. I have downloaded many, many files and will continue to get the updates and any new files that interest me. I have also done my best to contribute. I've learned just about everything I know about my GPS from this website. Miss POI and Motorcycle Mama were my mentors in my early stages of creating POIs. I have uploaded 9 files of my own creation and will not upload them to any other website. I feel that strongly about this one. I agree with alanrobin1. I feel like I'm part of a big family here. No one has ever made me feel like I didn't belong here. That's unique for sites like this.

Nothing.....

Nothing wrong with that. We're just curious how, when, why etc. people use or access this site. Thanks for the input.

There is probably another 50 or so people that paid for their subscription.

On GPS POI US's Site, they said they have 4562 records. But, the last time they updated it was back in May 27. Either we have a lot missing or their is a little outdated.

I still trust poi-factory's weekly update, but this week there seems to be no update as the file says "Last updated 6/25/08." I looked again in the recently updated files and it says it was from 7/2/08. So i think you need an update on the last updated part.

With only 385 active members that would really show why Paul lost to the Garmin Vehicles thing.

how we count locations

bluestring wrote:

We count each intersection only once, I know that there are other sites that have a listing for each individual camera.

Miss POI

?

How can the almost 400 active members engender greater participation by the non-active members? The circle can be enlarged and some hover on the borderline between active and non-active status. These can be incorporated if we generate more ideas about involving them, while seeking ways to increase overall active members, even from among casual visitors.

Worth a thousand words

Probably turning on the ability of the BBS to to post picture files would be a start! Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

Maybe lock Most of the files unless active Member, period!

Just a thought

Locking files would be a dis-incentive

dog_poop wrote:

Bob, I respectfully disagree with the idea of locking most files. Like many of us, I got a GPSr, found this site, and began downloading files of interest. In just the past 5 weeks or so I have discovered some great hacks and added several POI files. I have even made and posted a few files of my own.

If most files were locked I would not have spent time at the site, and not discovered what a great group this is. I am not a joiner, nor do I participate in other forums. This site is different. Thanks to all of the members, both active and casual!

How to encourage more participation from newbies? In the real world, if someone starts a new job they are shown the water cooler and rest rooms, introduced to some of their co-workers, maybe invited to join others at lunch. What might the online version of this be. Something more than "read the FAQs"

Dear Larry,

You put it very well. Thank you.

I too do not participate in other places and although I am only tending one little garden here at the moment (my Hess station file), I try to water and weed it regularly. It started by my asking when I first arrived whether there were a Custom POI file for Hess stations here ar The POI-Factory. I was told there was not but was encouraged to start one. I am also encouraged by the download meter; it seems the fruits of my labours are appreciated.

Locking the files would be a bad idea. It is better to encourage others to make and maintain their own gardens.

david

P.S. I hope I did not write "encourage" too many times.

Its awesome to ....

Hearing different perspectives on how you use and view the site is very interesting.

Any other......

Does anyone else have any other experiences concerning this website??

Me.. When I first came here ...

When I 1st came to poi factory, i was just looking for files too. Mostly the red light one. But now, I have not really d/led any files unless I know that I am going somewhere and need some info. I trust this info from here. I have not had many errors and everyone is great. About the red light stuff. i dont even bother, i dont really go thu them anyways but they are nice to know about. so about every 3 - 6 months, i may d/l one but really is not why I am here. i love the posts on this site. The people are gre3at. I could post ALMOST anything and would not get a tounge lashing about not reading or the post had already be posted. I LOVE this place.. and besides, MISS POI is fantastic! ( you know... where is JM?) havent heard from him is a long time!

Active....

I first came here looking for general AIO POI files... I noticed my GPSr wasn't finding a few things I wanted, so I DLed a few POI files, and now I have the coordinates of every single Del Taco, KFC, In-N-Out, and Cost Co in the US...and possibly Canada. grin

Though the forum is basic at best...and has a few annoyances, I stayed for other reasons; mainly the fact that people here know the ins-and-outs of POI files, various GPS units, and are generally knowledgeable.

Not busy?

When I first came here 8? maybe 9 months ago, I could come back every few days and read the maybe 2 or 3 pages of post. Now if I am gone a couple days, there is 23 pages. It is quite a setup here. I am here and also read the Zumo forums. This place rocks, even though i don't see a lot of post about the Zumo, but the other info is great.
