Complete POI file vs localized file

Hi all,

We are planning a trip down the US East coast next month and I wanted to load the Rest Areas file in my Nuvi 260.

Looking at the available files, I was wondering if the size of the POI file or the number of POI had any performance impact on loading, searching or alerting.

Our trip will take us through 7 states, so is there any reason besides convenience to load the combined file?

Miss POI's story

I remember the first trip that we took with our GPS and how frantic we were to find a rest stop. We decided to use the search feature on the GPS to find the next one, it showed one about 20 miles ahead.

We told our 4 year old that she was just going to have to hold it for a while and then we found that there was a rest stop closer that was not in the unit.

She was not able to go along side the road on the side of the car or in a bush.

If we had had the combined rest area file we would have saved ourselves the tension and stress of her making it to the bathroom without an accident.

This file has been made so that it alerts you before the exit instead of where the rest area is located also so you will be notified with more accuracy then the built in file.

You shouldn't see much impact

From my experience, you should not see much of a practical impact on searching or alerting. I have over 66,000 locations loaded on my c530 and it is very responsive.

I loaded

I loaded the combined file in my Nuvi 260 (along with several thousand other POI's). I see no reason not to just load the whole thing, then you don't have to worry about it. I update it to the latest file before any new road trip. That is one custom POI file that I can say I've used a lot. I wouldn't be caught without it.

Hi all,

Hi all,

I would not worry about too many POIs slowing down a Nuvi GPS refresh/response. Some older GPSRs may have file size or POI max.

I have about 900,000 Custom POIs on my Nuvi 350 and on my wife's Nuvi 260. Neither one shows any lag. I DO see a significant lag with Garmin Topo maps on my Nuvis either with or without Custom POIs.
