Custom Mapping Help

HI am new to GPS and was wondering if folks out there can point me in the right direction.

I'd like to see about taking a E911 Map of my county and then making it available someway on my GPS or a higher end GPS.

For example .... my county has a County Road 5 which shows on the GPS as CR-5 but in E911 terms it is like 151st Street.

Basically every country road in the county has a street or ave number assigned. Each residence has a Fire number. I'd like to "overlay" if you will this map and make it available in the GPS.

You might ask why I want this and it is because I belong to the volunteer ambulance service and we'd like to incorporate this technology into our three rigs.

If anyone can share pointers or resources that would be great.

Great

I will read over it.

I'd like to share dialog with someone who has attempted something similar and has been successful.

Thanks...

Seems pretty complicated and requires much software to accomplish.....

Yep.

I was able to create a custom map....

I was able to create a custom Map and I can see it on my nuvi now.

I created a custom map for a county road in my locale that is name CR-15 but the custom map has the proper E911 name of 61st Street.

How, I cannot seem to get the 61st street to show up when I try to enter an address.

Anyone got any ideas why I cannot?

Also, I searched the surronding counties in my area and the two surronding my county all have updated E911 street/avenue names but ours does not. Does anyone know how long it takes to get these into the Garmin maps?

Impressive - you've set a new world record for "New to gps...I've just created a map" grin

What process have you gone through? What elements have you defined in your map? (POIs, or roads).

There was a problem getting things to show up in the searches - the guys doing the 'open' NZ maps ran into this issue. I think it was do with cgpsmapper not being able to create 'NT' maps. I understand this is now fixed in the commercial version of cgpsmapper (and that available for free @ http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com).

It strikes me, that your problem can be addressed by POIs (in one form or another) - you don't really want to add any new or missing features, do you? - if I understand correctly, you really just want some additional 'labels'.

The advantages of POIs embedded in maps, are

  1. You can switch the whole set of them on/off as required.
  2. You can choose the zoom level at which they appear.

If you used Custom POIs, you would be able to search for them ok, but you may find that they do not really appear on the map, except at extreme levels of zoom. One way around this, would be to assign them a '124mph' Speed Alert. A side-effect of speed alerts, is that they are displayed 'sooner' than ordinary Custom POIs.

Alternatively, the Favourites mechanism may do what you require. These also display more readily on the map, than Custom POIs but you are limited to 500 of them.

This is what I did:

I watched the video demos by GWS in one of the prior links.

I followed GWS's process by defining in google earth. I did a point and a path. Point representing a Rural Address on the E911 grid and then the path was the E911 61st Street which on the garmin map shows at CR-15.

I converted using the GPSBabel to take the .klm file to make it a .gpx file.

Then I opened it in GPSMapEdit and then did the ouput of the .mp and .img file

While in GPSMapEdit I defined the path as a highway road. The point was a house.

After that I used the MapSetTool kit to take the output from the GPSMapEdit and make it available in Garmin Mapsource.

I then opened Garmin Mapsource and looked for the output and then transmitted it to my Garmin Nuvi.

Like I said, I can do the custom POI's those work and I can see the address and new road name that I think is just an overlay but as far as driving directions go it does not pick up the new street name.

I think I have two issues.

1. Since my county is not mapped in Garmin Maps with the E911 Street Names I need to figure out if I can some how make a change so they do show. NOt sure how or if it is possible. I.e. Directions to a POI says use CR-15 but I want it to say 61st Street.

2. I am not sure if the Rural addresses will ever be geocoded so I think I'll have to rely on the custom POI's. The Land management office is going to supply me with a hardcopy and perhaps soft copy of all of the E911 Addresses with the GPS coordinates so that should not be a problem.

I got to wonder how other services do this? I'd think there would be a market for this and the information should be readily available for the right $$$.

Again, anyone who wants to chime in please do....

Thanks for that last link.....

I went to that link you gave me and did a search on USA and found this link:

http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/mapview.php?id=1808

This is exactly what I want to do but just not sure how to get there.....

Looks like this "Justin" mapped the Washtenaw MI county and I want to Map Rock County MN.
