Nuvi 760 - Use slow SD card

grin I received my new Nuvi 760 from Costco yesterday and had a problem with some software updates. I finally got the unit registered using my wife's computer (Vista) during my 180 minute wait, but it said I had to pay $69.99 to update to 2009 maps from the 2008 maps installed. So I waited for my second tech, he checked my registration and said he would have the 2009 map update DVD shipped today, free of charge. Is that service or what?
During our conversation he asked if I had any further questions and I asked about loading additional maps. He said no problem, but to load them on the SD card. He confirmed the 2gb max and suggested that I dig out one of my older, slower SD cards. He said the the slower cards seem to perform better in the Garmin units than the newer high speed cards.
I hope that information is useful. I really wanted the high speed cards for use in my cameras anyway.

I think some healthy sceptism is in order, in the absence of any technical details... neutral

Is there any difference in read speeds, between different cards?. (I realise there are large differences in write speeds - but the Garmin unit doesn't do any writing).

Repeating what I was told

I am merely repeating what I was told by a Gramin technical rep last night, and what you say may be very true. I did find that "Products designed exclusively to support previous SD specifications 1.0 and 1.1 will not be able to utilize SDHC cards", but that does not explain the speed issue.

edit - He said, as I remember, that the slower cards seemed to perform better in Garmin units.

By the way. Someone got it

By the way. Someone got it confirmed by Garmin that the gps could read any size sd card. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/14205

Nuvi 760 - Use slow SD card

Have a 750 and have never had any problems with several new SD cards

Garmin 760 can read SDHC cards

I have 8GB SDHC card in my 760 and have no problems. The technical support or CSR doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

I use 4GB in my 760

Well, he's wrong on the size. There's lots of us using larger than 2GB cards. I don't think there is any value with a high-speed card vs a slower card unless you plan on managing a lot of MP3 files AND you have a separate card reader. The Nuvi interface is slow USB through the cable, so a faster card would get you no gain in file download speed. Pull the card out and stick it in a USB High Speed reader and you can fill it up with MP3's much more quickly.

i use a 4 gig high capacity

i use a 4 gig high capacity and no problems i asked the tech at garmin he said i can use any card up to 8 gigs but said i better get a high capacity card i have no problems with mine

Use Slow SD Card

I'm not sure in what respect the slower cards could work better on the 760 but for sure the interface is either USB1 or the Garmin is crap at writing and reading cards. With a USB1 interface the extra expense of a high speed card is wasted so save the bucks and get an external reader/writer. I just bought a Kingston MobileLite reader which comes with a 2GB SD card for $18 CDN and transfers are now happening almost 20x faster.

Agreed

Hornbyp raises good point - I concur that there probably isn't any difference in read speeds.

Read Speeds Between Cards

After seeing this Thread I did some searching about SD cards. I found one article in particular that I found very enlightening. "CF/SD Performance Data Base" I think you will find it very interesting.

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007

After you are at the above link you can go to individual manufacturers and there see the big difference between the Read/Write speeds of the sd cards.

The article also talks about counterfeit cards, and how the performance is bad.

Hope this will solve your ideas about the questions and comments raised in this thread.
