??? Two Mac-incompatible .gpx POI Factory library files ...any ideas?

I've read about some POI files appending .txt and .xml to the end of the .gpx or .csv extensions on a Mac. When it happened on .csv I just removed the .txt extension and it all worked fine. However, although 20 of the 24 I just installed are .csv, the remaining 4 are .gpx. Two worked fine and the other two I downloaded from here downloaded as .gpx.xml (where the .xml is not always visible and unable to be removed from the file name). I compared my two working .gpx files without they .xml and the other two problematic ones. The working two had nice, flush left margins while the .xml ones with the issues had "wavy" left margins. I've seen this before in HTML page code, etc. but I'm assuming the difference in appearance when viewing the files in a text program as well as the hidden but fixed .xml add-on extensions are the cause.

Did any other Mac users here have trouble with these two and if so, what is the problem? Are they simply Mac-incompatible or is there some sort of improper format structure? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

The two problematic files (.gpx.xml) are...

Cold Stone POI

I downloaded the Cold Stone file and if I did not remove the .xml and double clicked on it, I get a game called Big Bang 4 in a Row. I asked before if anyone knew where this came from. If I remove the ,xml and double click the computer opens a program called gpx2gpi and hangs. This is on an intel iMac. I have no idea where to go from here.

The files are OK...

I can't comment on your Mac problems, but I can tell you that the files are ok.

They are structurally sound and can be loaded by Garmin's PC utilities (Mapsource etc). They can't be validated against their schema - but there again, nor can any of Garmin's sad

In short - this is a Mac issue, of some sort. It might be as simple as the filename getting changed, so that they're no longer .gpx files.

Just Change the Name

I downloaded the Cold Stone POI file with both a PC and a Mac. I was convinced I'd see a problem when I opened the file on the PC with GeePeeEx Editor, but it looked fine.

I went back to the Mac and deleted the xml extension and used the beta version of POI Loader to create a gpi file; it went smoothly with all 402 locations loading.

GPX files do not appear as left justified when viewed with a text editor. Yes, certain files are being created and/or undergoing name changes in such a manner as to create a need for this extra step for Mac users, but thus far nobody seems to know exactly what methodology is causing this to happen. I see that many different programs are referenced as having been used by Traveler in the creation and editing of these two files, including XML Spy and GPX Toolkit (beta).

Isolating the problem...

Well I only mentioned the wavy left margin because I only have four .gpx files to compare (the rest are .csv's) and the two that load fine are flush left margin and the ones that don't are wavy. Also, the ones that don't have the additional extension.

I know for sure it is something simple if it is loading fine on a PC and most files do as well on PC and Mac both. When you say all 402 locations loaded fine with Mac, did you verify that they appeared on the nuvi or just that there was no issue with POI Loader when converting them? I got no error message but they do not show up on the nuvi. What about the Sweet Tomatoes file, anyone try that with a Mac then check it on nuvi? Like I said originally, the .xml extension is not always visible depending where you're viewing the file icon and I have not been unable to remove it from the file name.

Bottom line is this is so simple and the kind of things I like to find the "one little tweak" that solves the problem or was causing the issue. neutral

I downloaded both, deleted the XML extensions, and I have loaded both files and everything works perfectly -- phone numbers dialable, etc. As for not being able to change the name of a file, that is beyond me; if you slowly click on the filename 3 times, you should find the cursor within the name and ready to add or delete. Worst case, open the file with TextEdit and do a "save as"

Safari problem?

Are you using Safari? Because I downloaded the Cold Stone Creamery with Camino (my default browser) and it downloaded fine withOUT the .xml extension. I then tried Firefox. Still downloads fine withOUT the extra extension.

Then I tried Safari, and that one downloads it with the extra .xml extension. So it would appear the issue is not a Mac issue per se, but instead a browser problem, specifically with Safari.

I know JM recently suggested Firefox as a solution, and it may be an issue of semantics, but I have a hard time saying it is a "Safari problem". As I see it, Safari is seeing something that is wrong with the file. That was proven when MaryAnn opened and re-saved two problem files and Safari then had no problem. After all, we wouldn't say that an expensive camera had a "problem" if a Brownie camera gave a nice soft picture of a model's skin but the more expensive camera showed blemishes. I'm not being defensive on behalf of Apple; I just don't like having to change browsers when it really isn't being caused by the browser.

Hi bentbiker,

How do you create a "GPI" file, with the Mac beta version of POI Loader?

I had the same kind of problem with a different POI--I forget which. I was unable to change the extension on the screen. I loaded it into Word as a text file, then did a "Save As", naming it with the correct extension.

It worked fine.

When you use any version of POI Loader, the file it creates is a GPI file -- POI.gpi .

What am I missing . . . ?

Hi bentbiker,

They say..."The mind is a terribke thing...".

In my case, regarding the creation of the .gpi file, it's true.

I didn't realize that the POI Loader "creates the .gpi file" when it uploads the POI files, to the unit.

DUH?

Yes, I used Safari. I guess that is the issue. I will try re-saving it in TextEdit in order to get rid of the .xml extension. And yes, I know how to rename files (probably learned that the second day I started using a computer years ago). However, there was something not allowing it to be removed, is what I meant, like when you don't have permission, except that was not the reason in this case).
